The Swan Yamaha team has today (Monday) confirmed that World Superbike sensation Noriyuki Haga will be completing their line-up for the 2012 MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship as he permanently replaces the injured Ian Hutchinson for the forthcoming season.

Fans’ favourite Haga is famous for his flamboyant riding style with much of his World Championship success in the past powered by Yamaha. Japanese ace Haga joins the MCE BSB Championship with the Swan Yamaha team following a record of 43 race wins in the World Championship, finishing runner-up in the title race on three occasions (2009, 2007, 2000) and securing third in the overall standings in an additional four seasons (2008, 2006, 2005, 2004).

Haga has already celebrated success on MCE BSB Championship circuits at World level including podium finishes at Brands Hatch, Donington Park, Silverstone and Assen as the Japanese contender prepares for his first full season in MCE BSB which gets underway at Brands Hatch on Easter weekend (6-9 April).

Haga said: “It is a new challenge for me to race in BSB and I am now ready for the new season with Swan Yamaha. I feel that after many years in the same series this will be a kind of restart to my racing career. BSB has grown a lot and I have big support from the fans in the UK, so I liked the idea of racing in the Championship. It will also be a return to Yamaha, where I spent so many years taking many wins and now I feel like I am going back to my family. I have won races with Yamaha before in the World Championship and now I hope that we can do it again in BSB. I don't know several circuits in England and the BSB Championship but I will do my best to get results this year for the fans, myself and for Yamaha. We will start testing soon and I am very excited to get back on track as we have big ambitions for this season. Finally I hope that Ian Hutchinson can recover soon from his injury.”

Team Owner Shaun Muir concluded: “It was a difficult situation for the Swan Yamaha team when Ian (Hutchinson) was sidelined with just four weeks remaining before we begin our pre-season testing programme. We then had to set out to find a replacement rider and the result for us could not have been better. We are absolutely delighted that Noriyuki will be joining us and we are now looking forward to welcoming him into the team. Noriyuki has such vast experience of racing a Superbike and during his career has always had a strong partnership with Yamaha and we are happy that we can continue that relationship this year. The Swan Yamaha team won the title last season and Noriyuki is really ready for the challenge of BSB and is coming to race here to win.”

Stan tests Arai at 100mph in the Dakar!

Following a crash at 100mph on Stage 8, as well as a contentious navigational ruling by the event organizers, Irish and British 2012 hopeful and Arai wearer Stan Watt is keeping his Crescent KTM 450 Factory Replica Rally machine in contention for a successful 2012 Dakar Rally finish.

Hindered by some non-bike related technical issues in the early stages, Watt started Stage 7 in 46th place hopeful of making up valuable time over the following fast stages. Yet, as many Dakar riders would agree, good luck and a smooth run can be hard to come by.

Stage 7 saw the riders do a full loop from Copiapo, travelling along narrow tracks in the hills followed by a vast stretch of sand dunes. Rearing to go after a cancelled previous stage, Watt was quick to make up good time and finished the day in 42nd overall. After a rest day on Sunday, Stage 8 took participants from Copiapo to Antofagasta, which contains the rally’s longest special stage on very fast-paced, stone-covered tracks. Running in 21st place after a good start, Watt briefly lost visibility in another rider’s dust cloud and crashed at 100mph after hitting a boulder. Thankfully he walked away from the incident without too greater damage to himself or the bike, and managed to finish the remaining 350km without losing any places overall.

Stage 9, from Antofagasta to Iquique, had been branded as one of the more difficult routes to navigate due to its very limited landmarks. Watt, patched up with a fully working Crescent KTM 450, made tremendous headway, proving in particular his navigational prowess by being only one of five competitors to reach Waypoint 6. However, a controversial ruling by Dakar organizers to subsequently strike this waypoint from the stage has left Watt in 41st position overall. This ruling, which cost him 15th place on the stage and a big jump up the leader board, is being contested by Watt and his support team.

Stan Watt:

“It’s been an eventful last few days. I was making good progress on Stage 8, but then hit a big boulder at around 100mph after I briefly lost visibility in a plume of dust from another rider. This then bucked me off the bike, but thankfully myself and the bike didn’t have any serious damage. My helmet did its job, I lost a little bit of skin, and my wrists are slightly bruised – but nothing that is hindering my riding. The main damage on the bike was the handlebars, which looked like they were more suited to a custom low rider after the crash. Over the remaining 350km I tried to minimize the time loss, and managed to not drop any places. I was lucky to finish that day.

“On Stage 9 I was going really well, and was one of maybe five guys to hit Waypoint 6. But the organizers deemed it too tricky because so few people found it – and cancelled it. Me and the team are contesting this strongly, as this would have given me a great boost overall.

“Apart from the snags we keep hitting, everything is looking good for the next few stages. The bike is going really well, I’m feeling good, and if we can get this decision overturned, we should be able to make our way through the rankings.”

With another 6 race days left to go, Watt currently holds an overall time of 36:28:27hrs with a variation of 7:43:10hrs.

Crescent KTM’s Stan Watt flying through the ranks at 2012 Dakar

In his third Dakar to date, Irish and British 2012 hopeful Stan Watt has been barging his way through the field these first three days of the rally on his Crescent KTM 450 Factory Replica Rally machine.

With a starting position back in 60th place, Watt had anticipated a difficult start from the beginning with a lot of riders to pass on what can be a very busy and dusty track. Stage 1 took the riders from the festive start at Mar del Plata through a short warm-up special stage along the dunes on the seafront, after which a long and fast liaison section guided them to Santa Rosa de la Pampa. Watt’s plan to reach the top 30 early on where however hampered by some minor top end speed issues, seeing him end Stage 1 in 87th place.

With his support team in tow, the issue was rapidly resolved before Stage 2, which saw the competitors head further in-land towards San Rafael. The first part was once again very quick with big, fast bends on firm ground, after which progress was slowed down significantly with a stage through the grey-coloured sand dunes of Nihuil. With no issues to contend with and his sights firmly set on a successful rally, Watt did not hang around and charged through the field into 56th.

Stage 3 proved the first of the very though tests for the riders, heading into the Andes Cordillera to San Juan. Its breathtaking landscapes may be easy on the eye, but are a real challenge for the riders - placing many rivers, holes and rocks in their way – as well as providing some incredibly steep climbs. Watt however, was once again in a valiant mood and passed yet another five riders to improve his overall ranking to 51st.

Despite being off his desired top 30, Watt remains positive and feels that he is now firmly settling into the rally.

Stan Watt says:

“It may not have been the start I had hoped for, but I am now really getting into it. The first day unfortunately saw me have some top end speed issues, which hampered my progress on the first stage. Yet there was not an awful lot of time separating the top 100.

“The Crescent KTM is working really well now and I am very much starting to settle in to the rally. There are some very hard days ahead for all riders, and I’m extremely confident that I’ll be making up yet more places. I’m now firmly looking to head into the top 30.”

With another 12 race days left to go, Watt currently holds an overall time of 9:21:07hrs with a variation of 1:49:25hrs.

Arai launched two brand new helmets at Motorcycle Live – the Tour-X4 and Axces II – and both went down a storm with press and public alike.

New Tour-X 4

The Tour-X4 in particular proved extremely popular, thanks to the continued interest in the Adventure Sport segment. Featuring a completely new outer shell, plus re-designed ventilation system with high-flow ventilation ducts, chin vent, diffuser system and visor brow vents, the Tour-X4’s interior features the Facial Contour System (FCS), and to tailor the fit also has a removable 5mm surface foam layer on the cheek and temple pads. The Arai Entertainment Zone, as well as the Arai stand, was the place to find famous racing faces. Repsol Honda’s MotoGP contender Dani Pedrosa – even though delayed a day due to fog – delighted the crowds with his easy-going nature and insight into the life of a factory racer, as did home-grown MotoGP rookie of the year Tech 3 Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow.

WSB stars Leon Haslam and Jonathan Rea put in regular appearances alongside BSB star Josh Brookes, and real-roads racers Michael Dunlop and Bruce Anstey rubbed shoulders with legends such as Steve Plater and Neil Hodgson.

On Sunday 20th November an incredible £4,000 was raised in just half an hour in the Riders for Health auction supported by Arai with fans bidding on helmets, pictures, caps, visors and other MotoGP memorabilia. The money raised will help to get more health workers on the road reaching millions more people across Africa with regular health care.

Also very popular with the public was the trying-on feature of the Arai stand; every visitor could try the Arai of their choice – or all of them – and explore every possibility of fit and comfort prior to purchase, or just for future information. The Arai Race Service too was, as ever, working flat-out from the moment the show opened to the end of the final day fitting and servicing Arais.

This YZF Yamaha R1 is the bike ridden by Jorge Lorenzo on his parade lap at the 2010 Isle of Man TT and features a one-off paint scheme and is signed by the former MotoGP World Champion.

The bike was also ridden recently by BBC MotoGP presenter Matt Roberts on Viva Valencia!, the name given to the charity motorcycle ride undertaken by Danny John-Jules (Red Dwarf's The Cat), Matt and Steve Keys (owner of the first Yamaha dealership in the UK) in order to raise money for Riders for Health, the organisation that provides and maintains reliable motorcycles so that health workers can reach people in remote parts of Africa.

Cal Crutchlow claims his best ever finish and is Rookie of the Year, Dani Pedrosa looks to 2012…

“I JUST WANT TO MOVE FORWARD...”
Before the last race of the 2011 MotoGP Championship all riders – across all classes in the racing community – paid their respects to Marco Simoncelli in a tribute lap led by MotoGP legend Kevin Schwantz, riding Marco's Gresini Honda '58' bike.

The race itself was tricky; the riders took to the grid with slick tyres and on the warm-up lap, some drops of rain began to fall. Casey Stoner pulled away from the start, distancing team-mates Andrea Dovizioso and Dani Pedrosa, who were jostling for position until lap 23. Then on lap 24, a new race began when it started to rain more heavily; Spies overtook Pedrosa and Dovizioso, and with two laps remaining Stoner made a small mistake and Spies took the lead.

Stoner tracked him closely and then, taking a slightly different line coming out of the last corner of the final lap, Stoner's Honda RC212V drove him to the finish line first, just 0.015 seconds ahead. Dovizioso and Pedrosa enjoyed a tough and clean fight, but in the final laps, Dani rolled off a little as the conditions worsened, with one eye already on the testing schedule and 2012 Championship. Dovizioso took third, while Pedrosa succumbed to a hard-charging Cal Crutchlow.

“It wasn't an easy race. I did my best, trying hard but I wasn’t feeling good on the bike. But especially in the end with more water on the track, I struggled a lot as in Australia, so this is something I will try to improve with my riding in the future. I had a good battle with Andrea and in the last laps, I lost a place to Cal Crutchlow, but I couldn’t do any more. Andrea and I were on a soft front tyre and we were maybe struggling a little more than Ben or Cal who were on a hard front, but it’s not an excuse. I just want to move forward and think about next year and the testing we have. It has been a tough year, but we will try to take the positives from here and be optimistic for 2012.”

CAL CRUTCHLOW, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3
Race Position: 4th Championship Position: 12th

“I AM OBVIOUSLY THRILLED!”
Cal Crutchlow ended the 2011 season in great fashion, claiming a career-best fourth position to win the coveted Rookie of the Year title. Starting from 11th, Crutchlow immediately found himself elevated into the top five when he avoided the collision at the first corner.

He then found himself locked in an exciting battle with Karel Abraham, who was riding an inspired race to try and deny Crutchlow from claiming the title; just one point split the pair going into the race and they were barely a second apart for the whole race. They exchanged fifth place several times but the battle became even more nail-biting when rain started to fall. Crutchlow, however brilliantly judged where he could push close to the limit, and took fourth place from Dani Pedrosa with a clinical overtake on the final lap.

“That was a pretty dramatic way to finish the season and I am obviously thrilled to win the Rookie of the Year title. But I’m equally happy to have finished in fourth place because that was an incredibly difficult race. I’m not sure what happened at the first corner but I came out of it in sixth place and just pushed. It was a really intense battle with Karel right to the end and both of us were giving it everything we had. The track was so greasy it felt like you could crash so easily, and when the rain started getting heavier I just got my head down again and kept pushing. I started to catch Dani really fast and wasn’t sure if he had a problem or whether I was pushing too hard. I slowed down because of that and Karel caught me back up, so it came down to the last lap and he obviously made a small mistake – he hit me from behind but I managed to stay on! This year has been an incredible learning experience and we have a lot to work on for next season, but I feel confident I can make the step to the next level.”

COLIN EDWARDS, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3
Race Position: DNS Championship Position: 9th

Colin Edwards was due to make his final appearance for the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 squad at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit, but is still recovering from cartilage damage sustained in the incident with Marco Simoncelli and Valentino Rossi at Sepang.

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI
Race Position: DNF Championship Position: 8th

“WE COULD HAVE PUT UP A DECENT FIGHT AND HAD SOME FUN…”
Nicky Hayden was involved in the four-bike pile-up in Turn 1 off the start, and had to sit out the race along with team-mate Valentino Rossi.

“I felt some riders coming up the inside really fast as we approached Turn 1. Then something happened and it was just the domino effect – race over in the first corner. I’m okay other than my hand being pretty sore. It’s unfortunate. One of our bike’s strengths is generating heat in the tyres, and that’s what you need on a cold, wet track like this. Already on the warm-up lap, the bike felt good. It’s easy to say now, but I honestly feel like we could have put up a decent fight and had some fun.”

Hiroshi Aoyama bought his San Carlo Honda Gresini home in 12th and finishes the year 10th overall; he heads for the World Superbike Championship in 2012 riding for Castrol Honda. Karel Abraham crashed his Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati in the closing stages, but remounted to finish 8th. He remains 14th in the Championship.

DANI PEDROSA HEADS ARAI LINE-UP AT MOTORCYCLE LIVE

Plus new helmets, racing heroes and great competitions...

Arai has a superb line-up of racing heroes, new helmets, top activities and great service at this year’s Motorcycle Live event, which takes place at Birmingham’s NEC from the 19th - 27th November, 2011.

Dani Pedrosa - at the NEC with Arai

Repsol Honda MotoGP superstar Dani Pedrosa will be in attendance on Monday 21st November and will be signing autographs and giving interviews on Arai’s stand B320, Hall 2. Opening the entire Motorcycle Live show will be Dani’s fellow MotoGP racer Cal Crutchlow, who’ll also be firing up his Yamaha M1 racebike on the main stage!

Cal will be spending time on the Arai stand, along with WSB racers Leon Haslam and Jonathan Rea, and all will be available for signing sessions and interviews at various times. The Arai Entertainment Zone, in Hall 3 will provide everybody with an interactive, live experience plus the opportunity for riders to meet and greet fans, sign autographs and take part in the programme of activity.

On the Arai stand itself there will of course be the 2012 Arai range, including two new models. The Arai Axces II features a completely new shell and interior with a wider aperture and visor, giving better peripheral vision and provides a fantastic entry point into the Arai brand. Also on display will be the brand new Arai Tour X-4. The Tour-X has long been the benchmark helmet for adventure sports riding and the Tour X-4 is a superb evolution, featuring a re-designed, new shape shell with reinforced hyper ridge around the base. “IT’S NOT BEEN A GOOD WEEKEND FOR ME.”
With a strong breeze blowing across the Phillip Island, and darkening skies, the MotoGP race commenced with a rearranged grid following the withdrawal of Yamaha Factory riders Jorge Lorenzo, after a high side in the morning warm up left him with a severely injured finger, and Ben Spies who was still mildly concussed after a crash in Saturday’s qualifying. Nicky Hayden and Marco Simoncelli followed pole-sitter Stoner into turn one, with the Italian making an early move on Hayden to take second. Simoncelli then spent the remainder of the race tussling with Andrea Dovizioso, beating his compatriot across the line for his best MotoGP finish of second. Dani Pedrosa didn’t make one of his usual brilliant starts, fought back into contention but suffered with tyre wear in the closing stages; he eventually finished ten seconds adrift of team-mate Dovizioso in fourth. With the absence of Lorenzo, Stoner only needed 10 points to win the 2011 MotoGP Championship; his win secured the title.

“It’s been very tough, I didn’t feel comfortable throughout the weekend and the race didn’t start in the best way either. I had a problem with the wind at the start, I almost lost balance and I had to put the left foot on the floor at the same time as the red light went out, so I had a bad start. The first few laps were not so good, then I recovered slightly, I overtook Andrea and fought with him but the front tyre was finished in the last laps. When I tried to pull away I was losing the front, so I couldn’t keep him behind and then the rain arrived. It’s not been a good weekend for me, but I want to say congratulations to Casey for his title, he’s been the strongest this season, always on the podium, with no mistakes, so he deserves it.”

CAL CRUTCHLOW, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3

“IT WAS LIKE SYNCHRONISED CRASHING!”
Cal Crutchlow was unfortunately caught out by the tricky conditions in the final stages while he was preparing for a late attack on Hiroshi Aoyama. He’d fought well to keep Karel Abraham and Randy de Puniet at bay when he hit a wet patch of tarmac at Lukey Heights on lap 24; Aoyama crashed in identical circumstances right in front of Crutchlow but the 25-year-old was unable to rejoin the race and finish.

“I’m pretty disappointed because it has been a very difficult weekend, so to get a top 10 would have been a very positive way to sign off. I’d been having a really good battle with Abraham, Aoyama and de Puniet and was confident I was going to finish at least eighth. But I came into Lukey Heights and couldn’t even see any rain and the next thing I was down. The weird thing is Aoyama went down right in front of me on the same wet patch, so it was like synchronised crashing. I had no idea why I’d crashed and someone in the crowd told me it had rained really quickly and then stopped – it is a pity because that cost me a decent result but I’ll be looking to get back in the fight for the top 10 in Sepang next week.”

“THAT WAS ALL ABOUT SURVIVING…”
Colin Edwards finished the first lap in eighth place as he tried to judge the unpredictable gusts of wind to maintain a fast and consistent pace as the race unfolded. He was seventh when the rain shower soaked the track in a small section with three laps remaining. Edwards opted to stay out on slicks, rather than switch to his YZR-M1 set-up for the rain with only a small part of the track affected by the cloudburst – his decision paid off and he claimed his third top six finish of the season.

“That was all about surviving because the conditions might have looked great on TV with the sun shining but the wind was horrendous. We know the wind plays a big part here normally but it seemed particularly bad and it was impossible to judge when a gust was going to hit you from one lap to the next. I got into a pretty good rhythm and was happy to be running a consistent pace in eighth when all the late chaos happened. It is never a good feeling when you see rain spots on the visor with slick tyres on but there was only rain in a small part of the track. I knew it was a flag-to-flag situation but I never thought about pulling in for the rain bike. I was just riding as hard as I could, but as safe as I could, in the last couple of laps and fifth is a great result.”

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI

“I JUST ABOUT LOST IT!”
After a good start from the second row, Nicky Hayden was involved in a number of battles in the first part of the race, lapping at a competitive pace. When it began raining hard four laps from the end, making the conditions particularly tricky, Hayden changed motorcycles and went on to cross the finish line in seventh place.

“Conditions were really tough, with wind and rain off-and-on at different parts of the track. My start actually wasn’t amazing, but I think everybody else got away worse than I did. I was in a good position, but I really had no grip at the rear from the very beginning, and although I tried as hard as I could, I couldn’t defend much when guys started coming past. Eventually I blistered the rear tyre and was just trying to make it to the finish, and then when it started to rain harder, it felt really slick. I just about lost it, and when I saw Bautista go down, I decided to come in and change bikes rather than risk doing the same.”

Hiroshi Aoyama crashed his San Carlo Honda Gresini after the downpour at Lukey Heights, but remains 10th in the Championship. Karel Abraham finished 10th on his Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati, and is 14th in the Championship.

Arai’s Dani Pedrosa takes first MotoGP victory in Japan!

“I’M SUPER HAPPY!”

Dani Pedrosa took his third victory of the season in a dramatic Grand Prix of Japan with Jorge Lorenzo alongside him on the podium in second position, and Casey Stoner in third – it’s the first win for Honda at this track since Makoto Tamada was victorious aboard his Camel Honda in 2004. Pedrosa made a fantastic start and was involved in the leading pack for the first four laps but Stoner ended up running off the track, narrowly avoiding the barrier. Andrea Dovizioso, while leading the race, was then given a ride through penalty for a jump start; Pedrosa took the lead and improved his pace lap by lap to take a comfortable win by more than seven seconds ahead of Jorge Lorenzo.

“I’m super happy with this victory, for the team that has been working so well, for HRC because this is the first win in Motegi with the Repsol Honda Team and for myself because it is the first time I’ve won here in MotoGP after doing so in 125cc and 250cc. The race was strange at the beginning with Stoner and Dovi really fast on the first few laps, they pulled away and then Casey had some problem and Andrea had a ride through due to his jump start. I was alone in front with Lorenzo very close, but I tried to put my head down and push every lap to pull away. I’m really happy because at this track I’ve had a mix of good and bad results and some bad injuries, so to come back one year later and win in MotoGP is fantastic.”

“WHERE DO YOU START AFTER A RACE LIKE THAT?”

Cal Crutchlow certainly had an eventful afternoon, but salvaged a deserved 11th place having twice run off the 2.983 miles circuit while trying to fight his way into the top 10. He also had to ride through the pitlane for jumping the start, but mounted a brilliant recovery to finish inside the points for the fourth successive race. Crutchlow was running in ninth place when he ran off track at Turn 3 on lap four after contact with Toni Elias; he dropped back to 15th and then lost a further 17 seconds when he was penalised with a ride through pitlane for a jump start. He returned to the track in last position but never gave up and he salvaged five important World Championship points to strengthen his bid to be crowned 2011 Rookie of the Year.

“Where do you start after a race like that? I knew I’d jumped the start because directly in front of me was Simoncelli and I just let the clutch out when I saw him move. After that I just wanted to push to pick up as many places as I could before I needed to come in for the pitlane ride through. I was pushing to pass Elias but he braked really sharply at Turn 3 and I nearly ran into the back of him. That put me in the gravel, so if you take off the time I lost in that incident and the time I lost with the penalty, I’m sure I could have been in the top seven. After all the drama I just wanted to finish! This is the fourth race in succession now that I’ve finished and I’m gaining a lot of experience. I haven’t felt my best physically this weekend and I didn’t know the track either, so to bag a few more points is a positive outcome and now I’m really excited about the last three races. I know Phillip Island, Sepang and Valencia, so hopefully I can have a really strong finish to the season.”

“WHAT A RACE THAT WAS!”

Starting from 14th, Colin Edwards kept his composure as the chaotic action unfolded in front of him to move into seventh position on lap 18 having brilliantly pulled away from Twin Ring Motegi specialist Hiroshi Aoyama. Edwards dropped back to eighth with factory Yamaha rider Ben Spies mounting an exciting surge back through the pack after he was caught up in a first lap incident with Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi. At the chequered flag the 37-year-old was once again the top non-factory rider.

“What a race that was and I’m struggling to remember everything that happened because it seemed like each time I went round a corner somebody else was in the gravel! There was so much chaos it was just about surviving. Right away I knew Cal had jumped the start and then Valentino and Ben were in the gravel. Casey was then off track, so I just got my head down and once the hard rear tyre got heated up and working good, I put in some decent times around the halfway stage. Honestly speaking, my pace wasn’t there all weekend, so to get eighth is a positive result and we can move on and try be much faster at Phillip Island, which is a great track.”

“I CAME IN WAY TOO HOT...”

Ducati rider Nicky Hayden was fighting with Alvaro Bautista for fourth place and lapping at a very competitive pace when he entered Turn 1 too quickly and went off track, losing several positions. He ultimately finished the race in seventh place.

“Our bike was pretty good this weekend. Even though I was only eighth fastest in morning warm-up, I was pretty consistent, and this weekend is really the first time I’ve been kind of competitive here. On the start, everybody flinched, and I almost got baited into jumping. Then I got touched by Vale on the exit of Turn 1 and went off the track and lost a lot of time. We were all racing, and it was normal for the first lap. I got into a pretty good rhythm, and when Casey came past me, I wanted to try to follow him past Bautista, but I came in way too hot and went off the track. It’s a shame, because with everybody making mistakes, I had a chance to get us a good result. It was my mistake, and I’m sorry to Ducati and everybody, because they worked so hard. Phillip Island is a track I like, so hopefully there we can do a decent race there.”

Hiroshi Aoyama rode his San Carlo Honda Gresini to 7^th place at a track he knows extremely well, and remains 10^th in the Championship. Karel Abraham did not start the race and drops to 14^th overall in the standings.

“I HAD SOME FUN!”
Dani Pedrosa finished eight seconds behind his Repsol Honda team-mate Casey Stoner to claim yet another second place at the Grand Prix of Aragon. Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo took the last podium position, but could not match the dominance of the Honda riders.

“We already saw in practice that Casey was very fast here and it was also like this in the race. I was losing some tenths in the first sector and I was unable to reduce the gap in the other parts of the lap. The second half of the race I was sliding all the time and I had some fun, but it was a shame not to be closer to Casey; I had many problems with the rear tyre for the whole race. My priority was to control the gap to Spies and Jorge in the final laps and get another podium. We've been second in the last three races, which is not so bad, but we want to keep improving in the coming races”

“I GAINED A LOT OF EXPERIENCE TODAY RIDING WITH VALENTINO…”
Cal Crutchlow quickly found his pace from the start after losing time in the braking zone at the first corner and his charge into the top 10 kicked off when he claimed 11th place from Colin Edwards on the fourth lap. He then launched an immediate attack on Hiroshi Aoyama and Toni Elias, passing both with masterful overtakes to claim ninth on lap six. Valentino Rossi then dropped the British rider back into 10th on lap seven. From that stage of the race until its conclusion 16 laps later, Crutchlow was involved in the most exciting battle on track in front of a windswept crowd of over 63,000 fans. He passed Rossi and Aoyama on lap 18 and despite coming under intense pressure from the more experienced duo, he managed to keep them at bay to claim his best result since the Catalunya race in early June. The seven valuable points collected move Crutchlow two places up the World Championship rankings into 13th position.

“I’m really pleased with how the race went because I was back inside the top 10 and having a really good and enjoyable fight with two of the best riders on the grid, who have had a lot of success in Grand Prix racing. It is a shame that I lost a couple of places at the first corner because I’m sure with a better start I could have been battling with Bautista and Hayden. But to hold off Valentino and Hiroshi at the end took a massive effort. I think if they’d started the final lap in front of me on the straight it would have been hard for me to slipstream. I gained a lot of experience today riding with Valentino and that has given me a lot of confidence for the next few races.”

“WE WERE PRETTY MUCH CHASING OUR TAILS ALL WEEKEND.”
The race proved to be a difficult affair for Colin Edwards, who struggled to find the right set-up to give him the rear grip he needed to push with his normal confidence. He made more weight distribution modifications to his Yamaha YZR-M1 ahead of the race, but the tweaks didn’t have the desired effect and he finished in 13th.

“That certainly wasn’t a great way to celebrate my 150th race in MotoGP. We tried to get the bike right all weekend but we were pretty much chasing our tails the whole time. We were trying to improve the rear grip to compensate for the speed we lose on the straight and for the race; we altered the weight distribution again. We put a lot of weight on the rear but it never really worked. After about five laps, the grip just went down and I wasn’t expecting it to drop off that quickly. Once that happened, I couldn’t stay in that group I was in and I just went backwards. If somebody gave me 10 million Euros to do a 1.51 right now, there is no way I could do it. The last two races have been pretty tough...”

“WE HOPED THAT WE COULD PUT UP A BETTER FIGHT.”
Nicky Hayden started very well from the third row and finished in seventh place after a great battle with Hector Barbera, that lasted right until the final corner.

“I had a good start and was decent at the very beginning. We knew tyre wear was going to be an issue, and we had a drop in performance after the first couple of laps. It lost grip, and I also wasn’t able to load the bike well for turning. I was okay in parts of the track, but compared to the fast guys, I was losing time in the last corner. I hoped to hang onto the second group for a while, but it just wasn’t possible. I’d like to have fought with Bautista on the last lap because he was on our pace, but Barbera and I were going back and forth, which hurt both of us and let him escape. It’s unfortunate, because coming here we hoped that we could put up a better fight. Still, this is the first race I’ve finished normally with the GP11.1, since at Indy I re-entered just to get points. Hopefully that will help us to get some data and be better off in the future.”

Hiroshi Aoyama piloted his San Carlo Honda Gresini to 11th place, and remains 10th in the Championship. Karel Abraham DNF’d his Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati and drops back to 13th overall in the standings.

Hot and heavy conditions for Arai riders in Italy, but Pedrosa makes podium again.

“I WAS ABLE TO IMPROVE MY TIMES LAP BY LAP…”

The twenty-eight lap GP Aperol di San Marino e Riviera di Rimini at Misano was a tough one, held in 62% humidity. Jorge Lorenzo took an early lead from the front row with Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa following closely behind. The Australian rider maintained the gap to Lorenzo at under three tenths of a second for the first ten laps, but he was unable to match Lorenzo’s pace, who gradually pulled away. Stoner tried to keep a distance to third placed Pedrosa, but was unable to fend off his Spanish team-mate who passed him on lap twenty two. Dani was happy enough with another podium, but admitted his bike set-up was far from perfect.

“I’m a little disappointed with the race because the bike didn’t feel as good as it was in practice. We wanted to make a change to the suspension to improve it a little but we had the opposite effect, sometimes it happens. From the first lap, I realised I couldn’t keep up with Jorge and Casey, at the beginning the bike was closing the front and then it was sliding in the rear. Jorge had a perfect race today, but I was able improve my times lap by lap and catch Casey. I overtook him and maintained my rhythm to the finish with another second place in two weeks, which is not so bad. It’s been two very demanding races in a row and this one in particular was perhaps the toughest of the season so far, as the circuit is challenging with so many hard braking areas and it has been very hot again, also after Indy it has been difficult to recover from the jet lag and fatigue.”

“THAT IS A GOOD BOOST FOR MY CONFIDENCE!”

Super-fit Cal Crutchlow needed to call on all his reserves of energy to claim his first top ten finish since he was seventh at the Catalunya round. He was inside the top 10 on only the third lap, navigating pockets of light rain that had started to fall on sections of the track while the riders formed on the grid. Hector Barbera dropped him back to ninth on lap 25 but Crutchlow refused to settle for 10th position and launched a sustained attack on the Spaniard in the closing stages. Crutchlow gave his maximum effort but couldn’t find a way by Barbera, who clinched ninth by just over 0.2s.

“I am really pleased with the race and it is my first top 10 for a long time, so that is a good boost for my confidence. Finishing 10th was three places better than my qualifying position, so it was a positive outcome. It could have been a slightly better result but I just got pipped by Barbera right at the end. I did everything I could to get by him but I had a little issue with the rear tyre. Corner entry was really difficult at the end, so I didn’t feel like I could really push and have a go to overtake him with any confidence. His bike had a little more speed than me, so I just couldn’t get close enough to have a go. It was an unbelievably hard race for the body too. The humidity was incredible and I’m glad I do so many training miles on my bicycle because it was a real case of survival of the fittest out there. It was good that we gained a lot more experience and got another decent finish and now I can look forward to building on this result at the Motorland Aragon.”

“I’VE GOT NO EXCUSES…”

The race turned out to be a difficult experience for Colin Edwards, who battled with factory Yamaha rider Ben Spies for the first eight laps, with the 37-year-old experiencing a severe arm pump issue from lap 21 onwards. The demanding humidity and hard braking zones at the 2.626 miles circuit only made the issue worse for Edwards, who rode on despite the considerable discomfort. His courage and determination was rewarded with 13th position, a result which retains Edwards’ position as the leading non-factory rider in the standings heading to the Motorland Aragon in Spain.

“I’ve got no excuses, today’s result was nothing to do with anything else but me. I’ve no idea but for whatever reason, I just always ride so tense at this track. I kept telling myself that I needed to relax and calm down and then on the grid there’s a few rain drops in the air, so that immediately means you can’t help but be tense because you’ve no idea how hard it is coming down on other parts of the track. I pushed as hard as I could for the first ten laps and was pretty close to Ben (Spies) and then it hit me like a pile of bricks. I got such bad arm pump I couldn’t feel the front brake or the handlebars and by the end I was just moving my arms in the direction I thought they needed to go. It got to a point where almost pulled in. But I gritted my teeth and thought I could probably get a couple of points, which we did. But it was a complete nightmare.”

“BAM! I WAS DOWN!”

Nicky Hayden had a tough qualifying session and started the race from 15^th on the grid, with plenty of ground to make up. It wasn’t to be, however and after a good start he fell while exiting Turn 15 on the third lap, and wasn’t able to return to the track.

“It was obviously a disappointing race. The team did a good job, as they made a couple of changes overnight, and in warm up I was able to go a couple tenths faster than in qualifying, with a good rhythm. I thought we had a better chance for the race. It was raining a little bit at first, which is normally good for our bike. I got a decent start, felt good, and was going to take a few chances to try to get up as far as I could. Then I lost the front on the exit of Turn 15 and—bam!—I was down. We looked at the data, and I’m not really sure why I crashed. We were tip-toeing because of the rain, so maybe the left side of the tyre wasn’t quite up to temperature, although it was still rider error.”

Hiroshi Aoyama rode his San Carlo Honda Gresini to 11^th place, and remains 10^th in the Championship. Karel Abraham finished on his Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati just behind Aoyama and also stays 13^th overall in the standings.

“WE ARE VERY HAPPY!”

Dani Pedrosa rode superbly at the Indy Brickyard to finish second behind Casey Stoner. Pedrosa made one of his trademark flying starts and took an early lead, however Stoner passed him on lap seven and checked out while Pedrosa maintained second position comfortably, fending off the Yamahas of Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies. Spies went on to pass his team-mate to claim the last step on the rostrum.

“We are very happy with second place for several reasons. After the qualifying session, we had to work hard to reduce the one-second gap we had from Casey, it wasn’t normal to be so far away from him. I knew that my race pace wouldn’t be as fast as Casey’s, but the team did a very good job, helped me to feel more comfortable with the front and I was able to find a good rhythm, just 3-4 tenths slower than Casey. It was a tough race being alone, but I focused on my lap times and I made my best lap at the end, so I’m happy with my performance and the bike. To get 20 points is not so bad after the crash in Brno and I look forward to going to Misano to try and take another step forward.”

CAL CRUTCHLOW, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3

“IT WAS IMPORTANT TO FINISH THE RACE…”

Cal Crutchlow’s reward for a weekend in which he worked tirelessly to improve the front-end feeling with his Yamaha YZR-M1 was his best finish since the Catalunya race in early June. He maintained a consistent pace throughout the race having led Loris Capirossi, Toni Elias, Randy de Puniet and Hiroshi Aoyama in a frantic opening few laps. A series of strong laps in the final stages saw him snatch 11th from Marco Simoncelli on the final lap to end his recent run of disappointing results.

“Firstly I want to say a big thanks to all my guys in the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team. They never gave up all weekend, even when we were struggling a little bit and it might sound silly, but I don’t think any of us in the garage have ever been so pleased to get an 11th place. After the bad recent run it was important to finish the race and I did that. The result wasn’t the best but my speed at the end of the race was really good and I’m happy about that, so there are a lot of positives to take to Misano. At the end of the race I was lapping faster than Jorge Lorenzo. I was a long way behind him but that still gives me a lot of encouragement. I’ve needed to finish races to gain some experience and I’m glad we did because I learned a lot this afternoon.”

COLIN EDWARDS, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3

“I NEEDED FRED FLINTSONE BEHIND GIVING ME A PUSH!”

Colin Edwards, wearing a patriotically painted one-off Arai RX-7 GP, made a fast start from the second row of the grid but as the pack jostled for position in the tight first section of the 2.62 mile track, Edwards was bumped back to eighth. He was involved in an exciting early battle with Alvaro Bautista, Ben Spies and Valentino Rossi before the field began to stretch out at the halfway stage of the race. With temperatures reaching close to 30 degrees, Edwards was left in a personal duel with Bautista until lap 23 when a big front-end slide cost him crucial time. With his front tyre starting to push more and more, Edwards decided to slow his pace to secure seventh place.

“I thought I got a fantastic start but the problem is the Yamaha is lacking a bit of grunt. I needed Fred Flintstone behind giving me a push to go faster, so I had a few people come by me on the run to the first corner. The first few laps I felt I could go faster but with Bautista sitting in front of me, I’d get close and then coming out of the corner he would just grab a few metres on me. In the twisty stuff at the end of the lap I was gaining it all back and at the last corner I almost ran into him. I really wanted to beat Bautista but he started to ride really well in the second half of the race. I was on his back wheel and looking for an opportunity to make an overtake but I lost the front at the end of the back straight and that was a warning just to back off and take seventh. The front tyre lost a fair bit of grip in the last few laps though I wasn’t the only one to have a problem. But I was top non-factory rider, I got another top ten and I moved up another place in the Championship, so it wasn’t a bad afternoon's work.”

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI

Race Position: 14^th Championship Position: 7^th

“WE THOUGHT THE SOFT FRONT TYRE COULD BE A GOOD OPTION.”

Nicky Hayden, who like Edwards was wearing a one-off Arai – this one celebrating his sister’s wedding – got a great start at what is his true ‘home’ race and was riding strongly in the top four. But the decision to use a soft front tyre didn’t pay off, and after seven laps he steadily lost ground before finishing in fourteenth place.

“It was a really tough day. We thought the soft front tyre could be a good option for the race, but unfortunately it only worked for seven or eight laps. Then I began to steadily lose ground until it even began shaking on the straightaways, and I had to come in. Since you’ve got to finish to get points, I went back out, and it was actually worth getting two points. I got a good start and was up front the first few laps, and that was the first time I put up a real fight in the dry all season. My bike felt fast in a straight line, and with this new gearbox, I could get out of that last corner and keep guys in the draft early on. We’re on our first race with this bike, and maybe we don’t know enough about what it needs.”

Hiroshi Aoyama took his San Carlo Honda Gresini to 9^th place, and is 10^th in the Championship. Karel Abraham DNF’d his Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati and moves to 13^th overall in the standings.

“IT WAS A SHAME. I LOST THE FRONT AND CRASHED!”
Under similar circumstances to the last race at Laguna Seca, Casey Stoner managed to turn a difficult weekend into a win without opposition in a race that he led from the third lap, when Dani Pedrosa, after taking the lead, lost the front and crashed out of the race, luckily without injury. With the absence of Pedrosa, who had been the fastest man throughout the weekend and qualified in pole position, Stoner had no rival and set a steady pace to cross the finish line 6.5 seconds ahead of his teammate Andrea Dovizioso. Marco Simoncelli claimed the final podium position, his first in MotoGP.

“It was a shame. I lost the front and I crashed, that was it! I was not even pushing so hard, I just took the lead and, well I may have tilted the bike too much, maybe the tyre was not warm enough, still I don’t know. The problem is that I’ve wasted an important race that we had prepared for very well. I have to thank the team for the bike they gave me this weekend, it worked really well, and I will tell them I’m sorry for the mistake. It hurts because we were well prepared and finally the race was quite slow compared to the pace we did in practice sessions, but we cannot do anything, just think towards the next one and try to get back on top.”

“ANOTHER CRASH IS THE LAST THING I NEEDED…”
Brno ended in unhappy circumstances for Cal Crutchlow; the 25-year-old was optimistic he could battle for a top 10 result, but his race was ended prematurely by a front-end crash at the first corner on lap seven after he’d just passed Hector Barbera for 10th. Crutchlow was able to walk away uninjured but was frustrated that his hard work throughout the weekend went unrewarded.

“Nobody is more disappointed than me with what happened because another crash is the last thing I needed. I am currently having a difficult run of races but all I can do is get my head down, work hard with my crew and try and put things right in the future. At the moment I am struggling with grip in the front-end and we seem to have been going round in circles a little bit to find a solution. Today I was off-brake and accelerating at the first corner when I lost the front. The last person who wants to crash is me, but I can only do my best. I am sorry to my Team and Yamaha but I am sure they realise that I am trying as hard as I can to get a good result. We’ve got a test tomorrow and that is important because we can work on the bike without the time constraints of practice. I still believe in myself and I am determined to get a good result in Indianapolis.”

“IT WAS NOT AN EASY RACE.”
Colin Edwards started and finished the Czech Republic MotoGP in eighth position, once again finishing the leading non-factory rider. The 37-year-old rode a determined race throughout the 22-lap encounter, which took place under cloudy but warm skies in front of a massive crowd of 155,400 at the Brno circuit. He spent almost the entire race in close pursuit of fellow American Nicky Hayden’s factory Ducati machine; despite launching numerous attempts to up his pace and get within striking distance of the 2006 World Champion, Edwards was frustrated in his attempt to seize a hard-fought seventh position.

“I said yesterday that if I finished in the same position that I started that I would be pretty happy. I guess I am pretty happy but it was not an easy race. In the warm-up I had zero traction, so we made a small geometry change for the race and it was definitely better. I had more grip but the lap time was the same. All I kept seeing on my lap timer on the dashboard was 58.5, 58.5. It must have been like that for about 14 laps in a row and at one point I thought it had broken. I just couldn’t go much faster and it seems we are lacking traction compared to the others. I was spinning the rear tyre a lot and right now our bike feels a little bit unforgiving. I was right on the back of Nicky for pretty much the whole race but I couldn’t do anything with him. Our lap times just didn’t deviate at all, so I couldn’t get close enough to him. It wasn’t like he had more grip than me, but because we were doing the same pace I didn’t get close enough to attack him."

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI
Race Position: 7th Championship Position: 7th

“IT’S BEEN A REALLY TOUGH WEEKEND.”
Nicky Hayden finished up at Brno in seventh position, behind his team mate Valentino Rossi in sixth, but much closer to the leaders than at any other time this season. The American, however, was looking forward more to the following day’s test sessions, where he could focus on new parts for this year’s Ducati GP11 with, obviously an eye on next year’s 1000cc GP12 machine.

“It’s been a really tough weekend right from when we got the bikes out of the crates from Laguna, but we chipped away at it. The guys have worked extremely hard, and we got better and better. We even made a change after the morning warm-up that actually helped a bit, although I didn’t really understand it the first few laps, and the group was already gone. I held on and got seventh, which isn’t fantastic. Still, the gap to the front is the closest it’s been this season, which is positive. The bike was really good in a few places, but I was slow in change of direction and couldn’t get the bike to finish the corner and was spinning the tyre a lot. We also need to understand why I had the slowest top speed. It would’ve been nice to hang onto that front group a bit longer, but Colin pushed me all the way to the end. The work’s far from over, because we’ve got a big day testing. Valentino tried some new parts on the front that they seem real happy about, so hopefully I can try those.”

Hiroshi Aoyama steered his San Carlo Honda Gresini to 9th place, and lies 10th in the Championship. Karel Abraham unfortunately crashed his Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati out of his home race; he remains 12th overall in the standings.

Arai’s Hopkins bags Superpole, Haslam tantalisingly close to a podium

“I WAS REALLY PUSHING FOR THE PODIUM”
Silverstone played host to a dramatic World Superbike round, with Leon Haslam coming close to clinching a rostrum finish in front of his home crowd, wearing a special one-off paintjob on his Arai RX-7 GP helmet in support of his chosen charity, SPARKS (Sports Aiding medical Research for Kids). Leon makes a contribution to the charity that is directly linked to his racing performance, and gives SPARKS £10 for every World Championship point he scores in 2011.

Race one started promisingly for Haslam, who made a good start from 9th on the grid to join the leading group in 6th in the early laps. As the laps tumbled, seven riders fell victim to the tricky Silverstone circuit, but Haslam crossed the line in 4th position after fighting hard with pole sitter John Hopkins and Marco Melandri. Top honours went to championship leader Carlos Checa. Race two saw a difficult opening lap for Haslam and he dropped back to 10th; but he continued to push and, at half race distance, managed to take seventh position from Fabrizio. However, with a four second gap to the leaders to contend with and a charging Guintoli chasing him down, Leon still faced a battle to the end, eventually being forced to settle for 8th position. But it was to be the same three from race one who took to the podium with Checa doing the double, followed by Laverty and Melandri.

“In race one I was really happy with the start, I was able to get myself into the position I wanted to be in and run with the leaders. I was really pushing for the podium and battled to keep with Melandri but I was really struggling to pass him and remain in front. I was happy to be running close to the front and the lap times were OK, I just couldn’t quite get on the podium. In race two I was having a few issues with the bike and was forced to adapt my riding style to try and ride around it. I got to the point where I was able to run consistent lap times but by then the leaders had gone. Now we have the summer break so I am just looking forward to spending some time at home and preparing in the gym for the next races.”

JONATHAN REA, CASTROL HONDA
Race One: DNS Race Two: DNS Championship Position: 12th

Castrol Honda rider Jonathan Rea remained on the sidelines for his home round of the WSBK championship at Silverstone as his right arm, broken at Misano during morning warm up on race day, June 12 continues to heal.

Samsung Crescent Racing's John Hopkins raced to fifth and seventh places as a ‘Wild-Card’ entry at Silverstone. Following his victory in Superpole – where he set a new lap record – the British Superbike Championship contender started both races from pole, going in full of fight and dicing for the lead in the early stages of race one. But with a riding style that dictates use of the rear brake, disaster struck mid-way through for Hopkins when he suffered a rear brake issue, effectively ending hopes of a podium finish – but he still finished the race in an impressive fifth place. In race two, Hopkins was at the sharp-end of the action, battling hard with WSBK title contenders Marco Melandri, Max Biaggi and Eugene Laverty. He thoroughly enjoyed his day’s racing:

“Boy that was a lot of fun. The first race was a bit of a disappointment with the rear brake pad issues, but I managed to alter my corner-entry and keep my focus to bag that fifth place. Race two felt better, but to keep with those factory bikes you really need to make up time on the brakes and on the gas out of the turns. I knew that would kill my tyre, so it was no surprise in the closing stages of race two when we started losing the times. Overall, I’m really pumped about this weekend. I’ve bagged my first-ever World SBK pole position, mixed it at the sharp-end and enjoyed the racing immensely. A huge thanks to the whole team.”

Noriyuki Haga and his PATA Aprilia crashed out of race one and DNF’d in race two he remains 9th in the championship. Jakub Smrz and his Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati didn’t make the end of race one, but finished 11th in the second outing, moving him back one place to 13th overall in the title chase.

Kawasaki Motocard.com rider Broc Parkes found the World Supersport competition tough in the early laps, with top names like Robin Harms, Sam Lowes and Gino Rea crashing or running off the circuit. The race settled into a pattern of Parkes vying for a top six finish which he achieved and after the race he was pragmatic, if a little unhappy with the performance:

“We struggled in the race big time and didn’t have the pace all weekend. It was damage limitation really, a matter of seeing what I could do in the race. For some reason our set-up is not working the way we want it. I could do the same consistent lap time but to have the pace to get to the front I could not pass people. Sixth was not so good for our championship push but we came out of here with some points and we have to improve and go into the last part of the season and see what we can do…”

The next Word Superbike championship round is at Nurburgring, on September 4.

Arai riders race hard in California, Pedrosa makes podium again

“I WAS VERY TIRED, ALMOST FINISHED…”
Dani Pedrosa started from third on the grid, and settled into second place in the early stages. His team mate Casey Stoner passed him, as Dani soon started suffering from fatigue and fitness problems; Stoner then chased down Jorge Lorenzo for nine laps and wasted no time in passing him around the outside of turn one on lap twenty seven. After being passed by Stoner, Pedrosa retained third position comfortably. He knew his fitness would be tested at a track that demands a huge physical effort, but has now moved above Valentino Rossi in the Championship standings to 4th position with 110 points.

“I’m very happy with another podium, the second after my come back from injury. I could have predicted this result before coming to Laguna because I knew it would be physically very tough for me and it has been great to keep up with the pace of Casey and Jorge in these past two races. Today, by the middle of the race, I was very tired, almost finished, I couldn’t get my left arm strong enough and here at this track you don’t rest for a moment, so I had to drop. It’s been quite difficult to set up the bike this weekend, I had a lack of grip generally, but the team worked very well. Now we have some holidays and it will be good for me to have some days off to rest and relax my muscles and be back training to arrive fully fit in Brno.”

“ALL OF US ARE PUSHING ON THE LIMIT”
Cal Crutchlow’s debut at the spectacular Laguna Seca circuit was unfortunately a short experience, his hopes of a return to the top 10 ended by an early crash. Starting from the front of the fourth row, Crutchlow was shadowing tenth placed Alvaro Bautista when he lost the front-end of his bike at Turn 2. The 25-year-old was unhurt in the fourth lap incident but it was a disappointing conclusion to a weekend that had promised much from the 2009 World Supersport champion, after he’d brilliantly got to grips with the 3.610km track.

“I lost the front at the second corner and it was a similar problem to what we’ve been experiencing in recent races. It was fine this morning in cooler conditions but as soon as the track temperature goes up, I have a few problems. Strangely it was only at that corner. It is a shame because I think we had a good pace. Bautista wasn’t getting away from me and he quickly got up to Valentino and Nicky, so I think I could have gone with him and been in that battle. I’m disappointed I didn't finish the race and it is not good for the Championship but I wasn’t the only one to crash today and it shows all of us are pushing on the limit. We have still learned quite a bit this weekend and the bike certainly felt better than it did in the last few races. Now we go to some tracks that I know and I’m looking forward to it because it has been a tough run and I need to recover the form I was showing in the beginning of the season.”

“HONESTLY I’M REALLY DISAPPOINTED”
Colin Edwards seized eighth from Hector Barbera exiting the famous Corkscrew section on lap 14, but was already six seconds adrift of the battle for sixth place involving Ducati duo Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden. He was able to run identical lap times as Rossi and double Laguna Seca MotoGP winner Hayden in the middle phase of the race, but was unable to reduce the gap and he opted not to take any unnecessary risks to ensure he collected eight valuable points. The result, which was the 37-year-old’s seventh top ten finish of the campaign, moves him up one place in the overall rankings to consolidate his position as the leading non-factory rider in 2011.

“Honestly I’m really disappointed because I came here for my home race and I expected bigger and better things. I struggled all weekend with the set-up and we made a wrong turn somewhere in the last couple of races that have knocked us out of stride a little bit. This morning we just put in the same setting I ran in last year’s race and that wasn’t great, but at least I felt more comfortable with it than what I’d been running all weekend. It wasn’t the best setting but at least I felt comfortable to a point where I could push for some decent lap times. I just lacked front and rear grip. I’ve never ridden so hard in my life but I was a second off the pace and when Cal went down in front of me, there was no way I could go with Bautista. I just had to be smooth because if I pushed I just ended up going slower. I still moved up in the Championship and got some good points, so now I’m just looking forward to a couple of weeks relaxing to get ready for the final part of the season.”

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI

“I’M NOT GOING TO JUMP UP AND DOWN CELEBRATING 7TH PLACE!”
Nicky Hayden finished his home round in 7th behind his team mate Valentino Rossi. He had good pace and rhythm but ultimately wasn’t fast enough to stay with the leading riders.

“I’ve won this race before, so I’m not going to jump up and down celebrating seventh place. We knew it was going to be tough, and crashing in qualifying didn’t help. I got a decent start, but I didn’t get to go with that second group like I had hoped. It was kind of like the Sachsenring: a good battle with Valentino, but thirty seconds behind the front. Vale was no faster than me, but he’s a racer: he doesn’t make mistakes and give you anything. A couple of times I thought I might be able to go up the inside, but I’m not just going to close my eyes and knock us both down trying for sixth place. We’ll take two weeks off, regroup and go to Brno.”

Hiroshi Aoyama rode his San Carlo Honda Gresini to 10th place, and moves to 9th in the Championship. Karel Abraham bought his Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati home in 11th; he remains 12th overall in the standings.

Arai rider Dani Pedrosa is number one in Germany!

“IT’S AN INCREDIBLE FEELING TO BE BACK AND WIN!”
101,309 spectators at Sachsenring, in Germany, witnessed an incredible battle for the MotoGP victory between Dani Pedrosa, Casey Stoner and Jorge Lorenzo, with Pedrosa finally clinching the win. It was a great race for Dani who returned to the top step of the podium at only his second race after having missed three races due to an injury to the right shoulder. The Repsol Honda rider today sealed his second win of the 2011 season and his fifth Grand Prix victory at the Sachsenring circuit (three wins in MotoGP class, and two in 250cc). On lap twenty, Dani also broke his own Circuit Record Lap record at the Sachsenring with a 1'21.846s.

“It’s an incredible feeling to be back and win a race so early; I didn’t expect it, but this circuit has been always very good for me and I made it happen. I was already surprised yesterday with second position in qualifying and to finish the weekend in this way is amazing, a huge relief for me after a very hard time with injuries. Here I suffered less than in Mugello because of the layout, but in the race today I had a strange feeling, something I’ve never had before. At the beginning of the race I wasn’t feeling great on the bike, I was fourth but I didn’t get nervous or worried because I’m still not mathematically out of the Championship battle, but I know it’s almost impossible. So, I just let the laps pass and in the middle of the race, with less fuel in the tank and when the tyres started sliding, I decided to step it up a little and it worked perfectly. I’m very happy with this victory; I’ve been suffering a lot even though this racetrack is not physically demanding, because I’m still weak.”

“I DIDN’T GIVE UP.”
Cal Crutchlow rode with typical aggression and he produced a fantastic ride under intense pressure to keep Randy de Puniet, Hector Barbera and fellow MotoGP rookie Karel Abraham at bay in 11th position. Battling a lack of front-end feel that Crutchlow had worked tirelessly to improve over the course of the weekend, the British rider was unable to keep his line entering Turn 3 on lap 26 and he dropped back to 14th place. The 25-year-old quickly got back into his rhythm, but despite launching a concerted effort to reclaim the lost places, he finished less than 0.5s away from 11th.

“Obviously I can’t be happy to have finished 14th because I believe I should be fighting inside the top ten. But taking the positives out of a difficult race, I was able to fight for the whole race with riders that are a lot more experienced than me, and who have much more knowledge of this track. But I didn’t give up and pushed as hard as I could right to the end and nearly recovered a couple of places. I just didn’t have enough grip from the front or the rear and it was difficult. I didn’t feel I could push any harder and it strange because we made a lot of big changes to the bike this weekend without ever really finding an improvement. We’ve learned a few things that will help in the future and now I’m looking forward to getting to Laguna Seca where I'll be aiming to get back inside the top ten.”

“USUALLY IT’S A DISASTER HERE SO I’M ACTUALLY HAPPY....”
Edwards delivered a determined ride throughout the 30-lap encounter, the American shrugging off the lingering affects of a nasty sore throat to finish in a hard fought 10th place after a captivating four-rider battle for seventh that included Alvaro Bautista, Valentino Rossi and compatriot Nicky Hayden, who are all riding full factory machinery. But with four laps remaining, he had to abandon his pursuit of the trio in front when he encountered a rear grip problem in the left-hand corners. Edwards though was still satisfied having set a personal best race time at the Sachsenring, which has traditionally been a bogey track for the 37-year-old.

“That was a difficult race because it was one of those where you can see a few places up for grabs in front of you but you can’t do anything to try move forward. I was with Valentino, Nicky and Alvaro for pretty much the whole race but it didn’t matter what I did or tried, I couldn’t get close enough to try and pass them. One tenth round this track feels like a million because it is so short but it felt like I was on a bungee rope the whole time. Each time we started going through the series of lefts from Turn 4 onwards, they just seem to have more traction than me. They’d pull a few bike lengths on me but then I’d gain it all back in the hard braking for Turn 12 at the bottom of the hill and hard braking for the last corner. With a few laps to go I was in Turn 2, off throttle and the rear came round. From that point on I had less grip and a bit of vibration and I couldn’t stay with them and I was making more mistakes trying to keep their pace. I’ve never gone great at this track and I’ve gone faster than I’ve ever run. Usually it’s a disaster here, so I’m actually happy...”

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI

“WE HAD BETTER HOPES FOR TODAY!”
Nicky Hayden won the duel with his teammate Valentino Rossi for 8th place at the chequered flag, although he had hoped to be closer to the front after a good showing in practice, where he also qualified in 8th.

“I tried to go with that group in front of me off the start, but about the second or third lap I had a pretty big moment over the bumps in Turn 1 and they took off. From there I had a big battle with Bautista and Vale. It was fun, with a lot of overtaking, but battling for seventh place, 27 seconds back is hard for me to take at a track that I love and where I’ve been on the podium several times. I got to seventh toward the end and did my best lap, but they came with me. Bautista got me on my last lap, at the bottom of the hill. I re-passed him in the last corner, but he squared it up and nipped me to the line. It’s easy to say now, but I wish I raced the soft tyre. Thanks to the team and everybody that worked hard, but we had better hopes for today, going into Laguna.”
Hiroshi Aoyama, on his San Carlo Honda Gresini rode to 15th place, and lies 10th in the Championship while Czech rider Karel Abraham rode his Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati well to 12th; he remains 12th overall in the standings.

LEON HASLAM TO WEAR SPECIAL ARAI AT SILVERSTONE FOR SPARKS

The children’s charity close to BMW World Superbike racer’s heart…

World Superbike racer Leon Haslam is once again supporting children’s charity SPARKS (Sports Aiding medical Research for KidS) and during 2011 is making a contribution to the charity that is directly linked to his racing performance; the BMW factory rider gives SPARKS £10 for every World Championship point he scores in 2011.

On Sunday 31st July, at his home WSBK round at Silverstone, Leon will be wearing a one-off Arai RX-7 GP to promote the charity. The stunning design features a blue base with yellow stars – the colours and theme of SPARKS itself – and wrapping around the lower portion is an infant’s hand reaching out and holding an adult’s finger. A large yellow star on the back has a young eye peering out, watching out for the chasing pack…

Haslam is happy to be involved with the charity, and is very pleased with his one-off Arai: “I first played golf in a SPARKS event in 2003 and it’s a great organisation. The work they do through medical research really has made a difference for thousands of children and families and continues to do so. I scored 376 points in 2010 but I’d rather score what Max Biaggi scored with 451, win the Championship and hand over a bigger cheque to SPARKS! I love the unique paintwork on my Arai RX-7 GP for Silverstone, too. Of course it looks superb, but at the same time underlines the mission of help and support that SPARKS gives to kids beautifully.”

Recently, combining one of Leon’s passions – golf – with a desire to further aid SPARKS, the Leon Haslam Classic was held at Wellingborough Golf Club, Northants, and raised £8,700 for the charity. More than 120 golfers took part in the celebrity-packed day at the 18th century Harrowden Hall home of Wellingborough Golf Club.

Highs and lows in Czechoslovakia for Arai riders, but Haslam makes progress!

“I’M PRETTY HAPPY WITH THE PROGRESS…”
In race one at Brno Leon Haslam made a good start from 13th on the grid and was circulating in the top ten, before slipping back into a five-way battle with Joan Lascorz, Leon Camier, Tom Sykes and Jakub Smrz. Momentarily finding himself back down in 11th place, a late charge from Haslam saw him claw his way back into the top ten on the penultimate laps, and eventually fight his way up to eighth by the finish line.

Temperatures were even higher for race two but Leon made another good start up into the top ten from his fourth row grid position. Fighting all the way, Haslam also passed Sylvain Guintoli and then moved past Tom Sykes on lap 9 to move into seventh. An on-going battle with a rejuvenated Lascorz held Haslam up as he fought for track position with the Spaniard, swapping places and battling all the way throughout the final lap – and just beating him to the chequered flag.

It was an inspiring result for Leon, having started way down on the fourth row of the grid, and these results move him back into the top five in the championship standings. The races were won by Marco Melandri and Max Biaggi, with each rider finishing second in the race he didn’t win, and series leader Carlos Checa taking two thirds.

“In the first race I had a good start but on new, grippy tyres I was struggling a little bit with my pace, so some of the riders got past. But when the grip levels went away, I maintained my pace – and they couldn’t – so I caught up again! That was a good battle and I passed three guys during the final laps, which was exciting.

In race two I was held up a little bit so Ayrton, who was in sixth, could pull a gap on me. Then I was involved in a really good battle with Lascorz in the closing stages. It was two pretty hard races to finish in eighth and seventh – and this is not where we want to finish, but we understand what the issue is and know what direction to take now. So all in all, I am pretty happy with the progress we made and I hope that we can make the difference at my next home race at Silverstone.”

JONATHAN REA, CASTROL HONDA
Race One: DNS Race Two: DNS Championship Position: 10th

Castrol Honda rider Jonathan Rea sat out the Brno round of the WSBK championship, taking time to heal his right arm which was broken at Misano during morning warm up on race day, June 12.

Noriyuki Haga and his PATA Aprilia finished race one in 12th and race two in 10th; he lies 9th in the championship. Jakub Smrz and his Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati got to the chequered flag in race one 11th, but DNF’d in the second outing, moving him back one place to 12th overall in the title chase.

Despite falling for the second time in succession while in the leading mix for the podium places, Kawasaki Motocard.com rider Broc Parkes remains second in the World Supersport championship. With series leader Chaz Davies unable to add to his race win total in the Czech Republic, Parkes still has five rounds to make up the points deficit of 36 to the British rider. The race at Brno was stopped three laps early by a red flag, after a technical problem with another machine and a few crashes – including a small trackside fire – brought proceedings to a halt. Broc was understandably disappointed;

“I lost the front end again. I have been struggling with feel from the front in the past two races and I do not know exactly why. I had no warnings in the corners and just fell by losing the front. I am very disappointed this time, more than at the last race. We had the pace last time but I just did not have the race pace at this round. It is not good to crash in the first few laps. But we are still second overall and have a lot of races left to run.”

Unpredictable conditions in Holland challenge Arai riders, but hard work pays off…

DANI PEDROSA, REPSOL HONDA
Race Position: DNS         Championship Position: 6th

Prior to the weekend’s racing at Assen Honda Racing Corporation confirmed that Dani Pedrosa would not race, and for one round only his replacement in the Repsol Honda squad would be Hiroshi Aoyama from the San Carlo Honda Gresini Team. HRC test rider, Kousuke Akiyoshi stepped in to replace Aoyama and ride alongside Marco Simoncelli. Pedrosa is planning a return to action at Mugello.

The race was won by factory Yamaha rider Ben Spies, taking his maiden MotoGP victory, followed by Repsol Honda team-mates Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso.

CAL CRUTCHLOW, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3
Race Position: 14th           Championship Position: 14th

“I’VE PROVED AGAIN I’VE GOT THE SPEED”
With air temperatures only just reaching a cold 13 degrees and earlier rain affecting grip levels, Cal Crutchlow fitted the soft compound Bridgestone front tyre to his Yamaha. He subsequently made the best start of his MotoGP career and ended the first lap in fourth place, showing phenomenal early speed to chase Stoner and Dovizioso. Ignoring the pain of the recovering left collarbone he broke at Silverstone just over two weeks ago, he superbly kept Valentino Rossi at bay until he started to encounter a front tyre grip problem after five laps. Determined to overcome the issue to claim his first top six MotoGP finish, he fought hard to remain in the top six until lap 11 when the problem worsened. He opted to pit for a new front tyre on lap 13 and then set a fast and consistent pace on his way to 14th.

“Looking at the positives I got a fantastic start and for the first few laps I was running close to the front in a MotoGP race for the first time. I felt confident I could keep Valentino behind me but then after about five or six laps I started struggling with the front tyre on the right side. I had no choice but to come in and change it because if I had carried on pushing it was going to be easy to crash and that’s the last thing I need to be doing at the moment. Without that I’ve no doubt I’d have finished fourth but I’ve proved again I’ve got the speed and shown that I can race with the best in this class. It wasn’t the final result we wanted but I can’t change it and I still learned a lot, so now I’m concentrating on Mugello and getting a good result there.”

COLIN EDWARDS, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3

“TO BE HONEST I’M HAPPY I MADE IT TO THE FINISH!”
Colin Edwards also encountered a front tyre grip issue as the race avoided any repeat of the earlier rain. Once he’d settled into a fast pace, Edwards was comfortably cutting the gap to the Crutchlow and Rossi battle when his front tyre started to lose traction. He held fifth until lap 17 but was unable to hold off Nicky Hayden. Edwards also then encountered a rare arm pump issue caused as he tried to compensate for the muscle damage to his left ribcage suffered in a recent crash at Catalunya. Despite his best efforts the 37-year-old was unable to maintain his pace and he dropped down the order to finish in seventh position.

“That wasn’t an easy race at all and to be honest I’m happy I made it to the finish. I was feeling really good and catching Valentino and Cal when I went through the second corner and lost the front. I thought it was just because I was pushing but the next corner the same thing happened and from that moment it was really difficult. Each time I was in a right-hander I couldn’t turn but that wasn’t my only issue today. After about ten laps I got really bad arm pump. I’ve got no upper body strength with the rib injury from Catalunya, so to compensate I was doing everything with my arms and at one stage, the combination of the two issues meant I thought I was going to have to pull in. It was a case of gritting my teeth and getting some points but we’ll analyse what happened because Ben (Spies) won the race on the soft front tyre. Our bike isn’t set-up completely different, so we'll have to talk to Bridgestone.”

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI
Race Position: 5th         Championship Position: 5th

“I CAN’T CELEBRATE FIFTH PLACE TOO MUCH…”
Nicky Hayden earned fifth place on a day marked by difficult weather conditions, with cold temperatures resulting in a number of early crashes, including Simoncelli taking out Lorenzo just off the start. The warm-up session was wet, but the track began to dry out before the race, and the riders were forced to change their setups on the grid and replaced their rain tyres with slicks. This is Hayden’s best dry result of the season so far.

“Conditions have been all over the place all weekend, and the race wasn’t any different. We went out with a rain setup, but we saw that it was drying quickly and changed to a complete dry setup on the grid. There were a couple of little wet patches early on, but it was okay. We made a small change for the race, but nothing big. The first lap or two, the tyres heated up and I felt really good. Then I made a couple of early mistakes. I touched a white line and also pushed the front once and had to go straight at the chicane. Colin passed me, and then I managed to drag him back. I can’t celebrate fifth place too much, but it’s my best dry result of the year and puts us fifth in the points.”

Hiroshi Aoyama, riding Pedrosa’s full factory Honda in Repsol colours finished in 8th place and is 8th overall in the championship. He was grateful for the taste of factory machinery;
“First of all I’d like to thank the whole Repsol Honda Team and HRC. It was quite a tough weekend due to the conditions and situation, not ideal to go racing in but we couldn’t do anything about this. We tried our best during this short space of time and I’m happy I enjoyed the race even if in a lot of pain after yesterday’s crash. In the race it was quite tough, but from mid-race I was able to improve lap by lap and achieve good consistency. This experience has taught me things and made me a better rider, I hope one day I can return to this team. Dani will return next race and I am sure he will be happy to be back on his bike!”

Czech rider Karel Abraham was caught out by the conditions, crashing early on and unable to restart, moving him back to 13th in the championship.

“WE’VE STILL GOT A LOT OF WORK TO DO…”
Leon Haslam finished ninth in both races at round seven of the World Superbike Championship at Aragon in Spain. Haslam battled through from row four of the grid in both races, holding 14th place for the early part of race one before easing into ninth place and a battle with team-mate Troy Corser in the closing stages. A much better start to race two left Haslam in eighth place at the end of the first lap but he drifted back to 10th before muscling out Italian Ayrton Badovini in the closing stages to ensure ninth place a repeat finish of race one. Yamaha-mounted Marco Melandri won the opening encounter, while fellow Italian Max Biaggi and his Aprilia took victory in the second race.

“It has been another tough weekend for us. In race one I didn’t get a good start and left myself with a lot of work to do. I felt like I had the pace to run with the second group of riders who were fighting for fourth place, but I made a mistake on lap one and was not able to bridge the gap. However, I worked hard, made up some places and finished the race in ninth. In race two I got a better start, the one I was hoping for in the first race. Sadly I did not have a good feeling with the machine, as we went for a softer tyre and I did not have the same level of grip, but I had a good battle with Ayrton Badovini. We just have to go through the data now and get ready for the next round. We’ve still got a lot of work to do…”

“I’M SO DISAPPOINTED.”
Castrol Honda rider Jonathan Rea was forced to miss the two races at Aragon and has undergone an operation to secure the radius bone in his right arm, which was fractured in a warm-up crash at Misano. The 24-year-old from Northern Ireland also sustained minor fractures to his right foot and left collarbone and is working on regaining 100% fitness as quickly as possible.

“I’m so disappointed to be missing the Aragon round because when we rode a couple of really cold laps there last year I did enjoy the layout. I like riding at new circuits and it would have been useful to get some data from there. It was a pretty fast crash last weekend – everything’s quite sore and I also got some gravel rash on my neck which is pretty painful, too. I’m going to concentrate on getting fit again as quickly as I can. When I get back on the bike I want to be at 100% so that I can really get the very best of out it and try to get us back on the podium and back to winning ways.”

Kawasaki Motocard.com rider Broc Parkes not only blasted off from pole he led from the front and looked comfortable, but was unlucky in the final part of the race. Losing front tyre grip from mid-race on, but trying to keep his closest title rival Chas Davies behind him, he slid off on lap 16 of 18. Despite trying to get going again, he had to retire and no scored. Despite the disappointment of losing the championship lead to Davies, Parkes is still a strong overall second after six rounds, with another six to go; “It was all going fine at the front, all under control. Then the front tyre felt that it was moving a little bit under me, from about half race distance. I was struggling to control the pace and a couple of times I lost the front. I tried to back down a little bit and then it started to feel OK. I had three laps to go and I knew there were two riders behind me and the gap back to them was pretty much the same. Then I made a mistake and lost the front. Maybe on days like that you should finish and settle for the points in third, or something like that. Anyway, it didn’t work out and I am really upset because it was good points we lost.”

Tough breaks in Italy, but also a win and a podium for Arai riders

“I WAS JUST PLEASED TO SEE THE FINISH!”
Leon Haslam finished fifth in the second race of round six of the World Superbike Championship at Misano in Italy after crashing out of the day’s opening race.
Having led in the early stages, Haslam crashed out of fourth place on lap 10 of 24, breaking a foot and damaging wrist ligaments in the 120mph fall. He again led in race two and was holding fourth place on lap 11 when the race was stopped to remove a stricken, crashed machine from the middle of the circuit. In the 14-lap restart Haslam again hit the front before eventually crossing the finish line in fifth place, retaining fifth place in the World Championship. Both 24-lap races around the 4.226km Misano circuit were won by Spain’s Carlos Checa, riding his Althea Ducati.

“I was just about on the limit with the machine and tyre when I was sent into a big highside and down I went, race over. Overall it’s been a pretty disappointing weekend; to have the pace to lead the races but not the pace to win is really frustrating. It was a shame that the second race got red-flagged as we’d gone for a harder compound rear tyre that should’ve been good for the second part of the race. The machine did feel more stable and more comfortable than it did in race one. For the restart we used a softer compound rear tyre and it really changed the characteristics of the machine – the front became a problem and I almost crashed a few times so, in the end, I was just pleased to see the finish.”

“I’LL TRY TO COME BACK FOR BRNO…”
Castrol Honda rider Jonathan Rea was forced to sit out both races at Misano after a high-speed crash during warm-up left him with fractures to his right arm and left collarbone. Rea had been searching for an improvement in his machine’s setting after issues in qualifying left him in 11th place after the final Superpole session. The 24-year-old from Northern Ireland was pushing hard in warm-up before he crashed at approximately 230kph at Misano’s fast turn 11. He was transferred to Ospedale Bufalini in Cesena where the fracture to his right radius and left clavicle were confirmed; with a number of other bumps and bruises, it is doubtful whether he will be able to line up for next weekend’s races at Aragon in Spain.

“Well, the weekend just went from bad to worse really – I had a crash yesterday which needed some stitches in my arm and then a 230kph crash this morning at one of the fastest corners on the calendar. Of course, I’m frustrated and I have some injuries that I want to take time to heal properly. We’ll have to miss Aragon next week, unfortunately, but Brno is a month off and the doctors tell me that the break in my arm would normally keep someone off work for three weeks. I’ll try to come back for Brno at 100% as it’s a circuit that suits me and the bike.”

Noriyuki Haga and his PATA Aprilia DNF’d in race one but bounced back to a brilliant third place in the interrupted second race – Haga looked very much like the rider of old, carving tight lines and riding with fractions of an inch to spare. He holds 12th place in the championship. Jakub Smrz and his Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati as ever had a superb qualifying, landing third place on the grid but both races ended in disaster with a brace of crashes; he remains 9th overall.

Broc Parkes rode a perfect race at Misano to take his first World Supersport victory for Kawasaki and take the team’s first race win of the season. Broc also seized the lead in the Riders' Championship standings. Having qualified fourth fastest, Parkes was in line for a good result and his longed-for first win came at one of his favourite circuits. Broc now leads the championship by five points from Chaz Davies, who led the race for a time, before Parkes swept past on lap five. He was a happy man, understandably; “Unreal to win. It felt really good and I got a good start from fourth place on the grid. I was really concerned how the set-up would be for the race, because we made quite a big change for the start, so we did not know exactly where we were. It was a little bit of a gamble but it paid off in the end. I got out in front, got to the lead, but just had to stay relaxed and control the race.”

The next Word Superbike championship round is at Aragon, on June 19.

Bleak weather but some high points for Arai riders at the British GP

DANI PEDROSA, REPSOL HONDA

Race Position: DNS Championship Position: 5^th

Dani Pedrosa chose to sit out the British MotoGP round at Silverstone to aid the repair of his right collarbone, which was fractured during the race at Le Mans. He had an operation on the 18^th of May, but the bone has been healing slowly and his return to the MotoGP grid will be dictated purely by the speed of his recovery.

CAL CRUTCHLOW, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3

Race Position: DNS Championship Position: 13^th

It was confirmed on Saturday afternoon that Cal Crutchlow would miss his all-important home MotoGP round at Silverstone with a broken left collarbone. The home crowd favourite was just starting the third lap of qualifying when he lost control of his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team YZR-M1 machine on the entry to the second corner. He landed heavily on his left shoulder and was immediately assessed by trackside medical staff before being transferred to the Silverstone Medical Centre where he was diagnosed with a broken left collarbone. He is also being assessed for a neck injury and further information on his condition and recovery will be made available at the earliest opportunity.

“THAT WAS AN UNBELIEVABLE RACE!”

Colin Edwards produced what can only be called a heroic performance at the rain-lashed Silverstone circuit, the experienced American mastering atrocious conditions during the British Grand Prix to finish in a deserved third position. Just nine days after breaking his right collarbone in seven places at the Catalunya round, Edwards showed outstanding skill and bravery to claim his first MotoGP rostrum since he was second in the 2009 British Grand Prix at Donington Park. With large patches of standing water littering the circuit and heavy rain falling throughout, Edwards quickly got to grips with the treacherous conditions and needed only five laps to pass compatriot Ben Spies to move into fifth. Edwards maintained a fast and consistent pace, and while other riders were being caught out by the tricky conditions, the 37-year-old called on his vast experience to keep his composure and concentration to secure his 12th MotoGP podium.

“That was an unbelievable race and to finish on the podium feels amazing. I was happy to qualify eighth but never in a million years did I think I’d be on the podium just over a week after breaking my collarbone. I need to thank Dr Xavier Mir for the repair job he did on my shoulder and also my guys at Monster Yamaha Tech 3 because they gave me a phenomenal bike today. My shoulder felt great and it was the muscle damage around my ribs that caused me the most pain. But the rain definitely helped because it was a lot less physical than in the dry. I just gritted my teeth and got on with it, just trying to stay smooth and not make any mistakes. But I saw a few people succumbing to the conditions and I saw P3 on by board and I couldn’t believe it. It was difficult but it was a good way to the end the weekend for the team after what happened to Cal. Nobody wants to get hurt, but being injured for your home race is really tough to take, so I wish him a quick recovery and hope to see him back in Assen.”

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI

“THAT’S THE FIRST TIME I’VE EVER HAD THE FASTEST LAP ON A DUCATI…”

Along with his team, Nicky Hayden found a very good setup for the wet, and the only thing that caused him to lose contact with the battle for the podium was the particularly treacherous conditions of the early laps, when he came close to crashing his GP11 Ducati on a couple of occasions. Clearly at home in the wet, he posted the fastest lap of the race and finished just off the podium.

“To be honest, I really liked my chances for a podium in the rain; if you’d have told me before the race that I could have fourth, I’d have said, ‘No thanks, I can do better,’ but I’m not disappointed with my ride. I didn’t get a great start because the clutch was jumpy, and for the first few laps it was hard to see and to get heat in the tyres. I had a big moment on the exit of Turn 1 and actually jarred my shoulder pretty good, but I tried to hang in there. I saw Colin in front of me for the podium, and I really pushed. I think that’s the first time I’ve ever had the fastest lap on a Ducati, which is kind of cool even if you don’t get points for it. Full respect to Colin a week after breaking his collarbone, but I still don’t like him beating me for the podium! But we’ll take it and move on.”

Hiroshi Aoyama splashed home in 8th place and resides 7^th overall, while rookie Czech rider Karel Abraham finished in a fantastic 7^th place, bumping himself up to 10th in the championship standings.

Crutchlow earns best ever MotoGP finish in tricky conditions!

“I MUST REST FOR A WHILE AND RECOVER PROPERLY”
Dani Pedrosa was forced to sit out the MotoGP race at Catalunya, which his team mate Casey Stoner duly won from Yamaha Team mates Jorge Lorenzo and Ben Spies. The Spaniard had surgery on the 18th May to repair a fractured right collarbone caused during his crash in the Le Mans race; it was hoped that through rehabilitation he would be able to race in Spain, however, due to the bone healing slower than anticipated he has been forced to follow a more conservative treatment. How the injury heals from this point on will determine the timetable for his return to competition.

“After France, I had surgery to stabilise the fracture of my right collarbone and hoped to be ready for Barcelona. I pushed myself as best as I could but I feel that my collarbone is not yet ready. I think I must rest for a while and recover properly. Since early this year I’ve had many problems and operations and I really believe I must stop now and let this heal properly. I would love to be in Montmeló with all the fans that follow me but for me if I’m on track, I’m there to fight for victory and offer them a good race. I feel that is not possible at the moment and therefore the most sensible thing is not to compete. Despite all the problems I had earlier in the season, this year I felt very strong and I was aware that I could beat my opponents.”

CAL CRUTCHLOW, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3

“NOBODY CAN RIDE THIS PACKAGE HARDER…”
Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team rider Cal Crutchlow heads to his crucial home race at Silverstone this weekend brimming with confidence after he stormed to a career best MotoGP result at Catalunya. Starting from the second row of the grid, Crutchlow quickly gained momentum on Bridgetone’s hard rear tyre and a series of consistently fast laps saw him easily reel in the factory Ducati of Nicky Hayden; he eventually passed the American on lap ten and was able to pull away, despite some nervous moments from the halfway stage as spots of rain started to fall on the circuit. Crutchlow was preparing for his first experience of the flag-to-flag format, but the light rain abated and he rode to a brilliant seventh place.

“That’s my best result in MotoGP and of course I’m happy, but I’d rather have got a result like that in a more entertaining race. It was just a test of concentration for most of the race once I’d passed Nicky and it was quite lonely. I caught him really quickly but once I got by I’d used up my rear tyre trying to chase him down because I struggled for grip after that. When the spots of rain came it was quite difficult. The white flags were being waved like there was a monsoon but there was only rain in the last three corners. Part of me was looking forward to having a flag-to-flag race because it might have given me a chance of fighting with the group at the front, but the rain never got worse than a few spots on the visor. Sixth to eighth position is where I’m at the moment but it is a good confidence boost as well to finish as the top non-factory rider. Nobody can ride this package harder than I am and I'm looking forward to Silverstone.”

COLIN EDWARDS, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3

“I DEFINITELY DON’T LIKE WATCHING ON TV!”
Edwards quickly returned to the Catalunya circuit, having undergone successful surgery to insert a titanium plate and 13 screws in the right collarbone he broke in a heavy crash during Friday’s second free practice session. He had already gained close to full movement in his right shoulder and in a brave attempt to continue his proud record of never missing a race in his MotoGP career, planned to start the 25-lap clash and retire after two laps. But after medical checks prior to the race, medical staff declared him unfit to start, though the 37-year-old is confident he will have no problems riding at Silverstone.

“I’m a little bit disappointed with the decision not to let me ride because while it’s not a lifelong ambition never to miss a MotoGP race, it was a run I was pretty proud of. I understand the decision but my shoulder feels great. Dr Xavier Mir has done an amazing job on my collarbone because it was smashed, but it was never my intention to do the full race. I just wanted to start, do a couple of laps and pull in. I only considered it because I was here in Barcelona and it seemed pointless breaking the streak. But I’m too big and too old to get upset and I’m going to rest up now and concentrate on getting ready for Silverstone. I know I can race next weekend and I'm already looking forward to it. I can't remember the last time I missed a race and I definitely don't like watching on TV!”

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI
Race Position: 8th         Championship Position: 6th

“I THOUGHT I COULD DO BETTER THAN THAT…”
Nicky Hayden qualified in 8th place, and that’s how he finished the race after getting a good start; he rapidly encountered rear grip problems and could not hold the pace of the riders ahead of him.

“I thought I could do better than that. I actually got a good start and the tyres came right in, so the first couple laps I thought we might be on for a good result. We used up the tyre really quickly though, and almost immediately I was spinning a lot, especially in the long corners. We had some ideas to maybe help that, but we couldn’t try them in the morning because it was wet, and it was too much of a gamble to try in the race. The rest of the bike felt really good. When the raindrops came, you definitely had to stay on your toes. I ended up in eighth, where we qualified, which I’m not thrilled with since normally we’ve been able to move up in the races.”

Hiroshi Aoyama crashed out and did not make the finish on his Team San Carlo Honda; he now lies 8th overall in the title chase. Czech rider and Karel Abraham finished 10th and moves up to 12th in the championship standings.

A tough weekend’s work for Arai riders in Salt Lake City…

LEON HASLAM, BMW MOTORRAD MOTORSPORT
Race One: 8th Race Two: 13th Championship Position: 5th

“THIS WAS A RACE WEEKEND TO FORGET”
Starting from 12th on the grid for race one at the 4.907km Miller circuit, near Salt Lake City, Leon Haslam had work to do and duly fought his way up to sixth place by the closing stages. But with just three laps remaining he lost track position to Ayrton Badovini and Tom Sykes he eventually finishing in eighth place. Race two was one to forget for Leon, as his difficult weekend continued and although he battled hard was just unable to get his bike working consistently around the circuit, eventually finishing in 13th place. There was no such drama at the front for Carlos Checa, who took his second victory of the day and increased his championship lead to 61 points.

“This was a race weekend to forget. We have identified some issues, and we have to solve these. I am confident that the entire team will work hard to bring us further up the ranks soon. We need to go away from here and regroup if we want to be strong for the next races, and we must now look to move the bike forward.”

JONATHAN REA, CASTROL HONDA
Race One: DNF Race Two: 11th Championship Position: 6th

“AT LEAST I’M NOT GOING HOME WRAPPED UP LIKE A MUMMY!”
Difficult qualifying sessions left Castrol Honda rider Jonathan Rea starting the two 21-lap races at Miller from the fourth row of the grid; despite a promising start to the first outing Rea was not able to finish the first lap, while in race two another good start saw Rea battling for a top six placing before he dropped back down the field, visibly suffering from corner entry problems.

“We just haven’t had a package that we could compete with this weekend and it was all I could do to finish where I did in race two. Obviously, the day wasn’t helped by not coming home with 21 laps of data from race one; on the first lap of that one, I was the victim of a very intimidating attempt at a pass that went wrong and we both fell down. As much as I’m disappointed with the way things have gone this weekend, I really feel for the guys in the team who have worked so hard to get things working. We just haven’t been able to find the sweet spot for the bike at this track and scoring four points from the weekend is just not good enough. We can’t walk away from here with our heads held high and the only consolation is that at least I’m not going home wrapped up like a mummy like I did last year...”

Noriyuki Haga and his PATA Aprilia finished race one in 9th but scored a DNF in race two, and therefore slips back to 11th in the championship.

Jakub Smrz (Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati) so nearly landed the number one spot in superpole just behind Carlos Checa, and followed that great result up with a brilliant 2nd place in first race, just 2.7s back from Checa. Smrz couldn’t repeat in race two, but finished 8th, and remains 9th in the championship. He was understandably elated after so nearly bagging the victory; “I’m so happy for the entire team, as they did a great job. Even after the warm-up we did not know whether the settings were correct, so I was at the beginning of the race a little unsure. But at the very end I felt really great on the bike!”

Australian Josh Waters, leading the second WSBK outing for Team Yoshimura Suzuki wound up 12th in race one, and 15th in race two.

The next Word Superbike championship round is at Misano, with racing taking place on June 12.

Mick Doohan to ride lap of honour with Nicky Hayden, Cal Crutchlow and Ian Hutchinson!

Arai and the Isle of Man TT have a long history together; the Arai Race Service has been a presence in the TT paddock, serving both racers and Arai-wearing TT fans, since 1984 and an illustrious list of TT winners including Joey Dunlop, Ian Hutchinson, Steve Plater and Bruce Anstey all wore Arai to victory. Arai also supports the TT with sponsorship – which includes signage around the course, suits for the marshalls and helmets for the travelling marshalls – and Arai remains the helmet chosen by the majority of TT riders to deliver comfort, dependability and sheer quality in extreme conditions.

Every year a very special guest comes to the Isle of Man TT to ride a lap of the course and for 2011 Mick Doohan will be on the island for four days, taking part in various events as well as riding the Arai Lap of Honour. Doohan is best known around the world as five times MotoGP World Champion riding for Honda (1994-1998) and during his outstanding career he always wore and trusted Arai.

Aldo Drudi has also crafted a stunning Arai RX-7 GP Doohan/TT helmet to mark this special occasion in white, black and red incorporating the TT logo, plus triskelion details and the essence of Doohan’s original paintwork – the famous red, blue and white striped design which has become so iconic. The Arai Doohan/TT RX-7 GP will be available on an order-only basis directly from any Arai Five Star dealer.

Ian Hutchinson made history in 2010 by winning five TTs in a week but this year will have to console himself with spectating as he still recuperates from injury. On Wednesday 1st June Ian will open the new Arai suite of the Joey Dunlop Foundation at Bradden Bridge House, which consists of three self-contained disabled accessible apartments, each offering luxury self-catering accommodation for anyone with special needs. At the request of Mrs Dunlop, the Charity makes a special welcome to children and young adults.

As for the racing itself? Following the family tradition Michael and William Dunlop will be looking for TT victories in Arai while top TT competitors Keith Amor and Garry Johnson will fittingly be racing in the 2011 Arai TT series RX-7 GP. Bruce Anstey will be wearing the exotic and state of the art carbon fibre Arai RX-7 RC. The £2099 RX-7 RC is based on the technology used for the GP-6 RC Formula 1 car-racing helmet and consists of an extremely stiff and light carbon fibre outer shell, reinforced with Arai’s Peripherally Belted construction. It takes Arai’s most experienced and skilled craftsmen a whole working day to produce each shell, working only by hand; only 300 can be made a year.

British Supersport team Centurion racing will be making its debut on Mona’s isle in 2011, with Dan Cooper riding a Triumph 675 Daytona in the Supersport class and a Honda Fireblade in the Superstock and Senior TT races. Racing in support of Help For Heroes Dan’s RX-7 GP has been supplied by Arai and will feature a one-off design by RichArt showing both the H4H and IOM TT logos. Team Principal Paul Rees, who spent 20 years in Her Majesty’s Royal Marine Commandos, was given permission to have the bikes carry the H4H logos in order to encourage the public to be more aware of this charity that supports the UK’s Armed Forces.

So the 2011 TT looks to be a fantastic edition of this unique motorcycle race. A tough day at the office for Arai riders in France.

DANI PEDROSA, REPSOL HONDA
Race Position: DNF Championship Position: 3rd

“IT IS VERY UNFAIR, I DON’T DESERVE IT!”
Dani Pedrosa qualified in fourth place on the grid at Le Mans and was looking to build on his victory at the last race at Estoril; it was not to be, however as on lap 18 Marco Simoncelli challenged Pedrosa for second position with a pass that left little room for error. Pedrosa, refusing to give ground, hit the side of Simoncelli’s bike with his front wheel and the Spaniard was down – and while he got to his feet quickly, he was obviously grasping his right collarbone. Pedrosa left the circuit immediately after the race in order to check in Barcelona if a new operation would be necessary. Casey Stoner, Pedrosa’s Repsol Honda teammate rode to a dominant victory, with fellow Repsol rider Andrea Dovizioso second and Ducati’s Valentino Rossi third.

“I was having a good race, the goal was to ensure another podium and I had it in my grasp. But it counts for nothing. Simoncelli overtook me, I passed him back and I had the better line, he just came into me releasing the brakes and I could do nothing. I leave here with a broken collarbone and he with a ride through penalty, good for him! Yet again, I come out worse off. We only just recovered from the nightmare of the last operation and now I’m hurt again. It is very unfair, I don’t deserve it.”

CAL CRUTCHLOW, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3
Race Position: DNF Championship Position: 11th

“I HAD THE PACE…”
After a superb sixth placed qualifying performance Cal Crutchlow's bid to claim a career best premier class finish was ended on the sixth of 28-laps, while he was lying in ninth position and preparing an attack on Ben Spies. Crutchlow was only 0.2s behind Spies when he lost the front at Turn 6; determined to get back in the race, Crutchlow's hopes of fighting his way back into the points were ended by a minor throttle issue that prevented him from continuing.

“I’m pretty disappointed because looking at how the race panned out I could have been in sixth place because when I crashed I was having a good battle with Ben. I’d caught him quite easily and was looking forward to a good race when I made a stupid little mistake in Turn 6. I touched the kerb and I lost the front. I literally fell off the side of the bike and that was it. It is disappointing because I had the pace to get another top eight, but these things can happen when you’re pushing so hard in a competitive class like MotoGP. I managed to get back on the bike but there was a problem with the throttle, so it was impossible for me to carry on. I showed my raw speed all weekend so I’m not going to be too hard on myself, though I was desperate to get a good result.”

COLIN EDWARDS, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3
Race Position: 13th Championship Position: 9th

“I GOT ONE OF THE BEST STARTS I’VE HAD IN A LONG TIME.”
Colin Edwards battled to a determined 13th place finish after he’d tumbled out of seventh position at the first chicane on lap 14. The Texan had produced a stunning early charge to stay in contention with a group featuring Valentino Rossi, Andrea Dovizioso and Jorge Lorenzo, but lost the front of his Yamaha at the first left-hander. Edwards lost his left footpeg in the slow speed fall but remounted and returned to the pits. Thanks to the quick work of his crew, he was quickly back on track and able to score three World Championship points – keeping him inside the top ten of the overall rankings after four rounds.

“I got one of the best starts I’ve had in a long time and I just flew off the line but it was the usual jostle for position at the first corner. I got a bit of clear track in front of me and I could see Valentino was coming back to me a little bit and Dovizioso and Lorenzo were also just in front of him. I was losing four of five bike lengths though coming onto the back straight and then I’d also lose a bit more time at the next chicane because I wasn’t that fast through there. I could see the gap was staying at 1.5s and there was nothing I could do. I wasn’t making mistakes but neither were they. When I crashed, it didn't feel like I was doing anything too stupid. I was on the same line and I didn’t get in there too hot. I was already looking through at the next corner and then I was down. I broke the footpeg off but came back to the pits and went out again and salvaged a couple of points, which might prove valuable at the end of the year.”

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI
Race Position: 7th Championship Position: 6th

“IT’S PROBABLY BEEN OUR BEST WEEKEND YET”
Nicky Hayden’s 10th placed qualifying position gave him plenty of work to do, but he ended up fighting over sixth place with Ben Spies and although he had to concede the position to his compatriot in the end, he was pleased with the progress made over the course of the weekend.

“We didn’t do ourselves any favors by starting 10th, but actually, we made a little step forward with the bike today. I got a decent start but was just really tight and lost some time. As the race got going, I was able to move up a bit and slowly bring back Spies and Colin. Colin crashed, but once I got in front of Ben, I wasn’t really able to get down in the 34s and get away like I needed to. Seventh isn’t a great result for us, but I would say that overall, it’s probably been our best weekend yet. When the track was cold, I was able to go quite fast – always in the top five in those conditions. I hoped for better in the race, but I’m looking forward to the next stretch; we’re about to really get into the season.”

Once again, Hiroshi Aoyama put his Team San Carlo Honda Gresini machine over the line in seventh place; he remains seventh overall in the title chase. Czech rider and MotoGP rookie Karel Abraham finished 10th and is now 13th in the championship standings

Arai riders battle hard and fast under blue skies at Monza

Race One: 3rd Race Two: DNF Championship Position: 6th

“I HAD THE PACE TO RUN WITH THE LEADERS…”
The World Superbike round from atmospheric Monza, in Milan, Italy was packed full of drama, with Leon Haslam scoring a podium finish in race one and then getting knocked off his BMW on the very first lap of race two. In the first outing Haslam had fought his way from sixth up to fourth, in pursuit of the leading trio of Laverty, Biaggi and Marco Melandri. As Laverty took a commanding lead on the way to his first WSBK victory, a dramatic and entertaining race-long battle ensued between Haslam, Biaggi and Melandri. Haslam gave as good as he got, and fought his way up into third place despite a late charge by former 250cc world champion Marco Melandri. Unfortunately for Leon his race two came to a premature end when he was knocked off at the very first turn; Laverty went on to win that one too, producing a maiden WSBK double in his rookie year.

“In race one I didn’t get the best of starts and I also made a few mistakes in the early laps which meant I had some work to do to catch the leading bunch. Still, I felt like I had the pace to run with the leaders. Max and I held each other up slightly which saw Eugene get away at the front but on the whole I was happy with the race and the bike. In race two I was hit from behind at the first corner on lap one. I am not 100% sure what happened but I crashed out of the race after getting a much better start. Following the crash I was taken to the medical centre where it was confirmed that I have broken a toe on my right foot, but I don’t see it being a problem for our forthcoming test, or the races in Salt Lake.”

JONATHAN REA, CASTROL HONDA
Race One: 6th Race Two: DNF Championship Position: 4th

“FRUSTRATING!”
Jonathan Rea was only able to achieve a single sixth place finish at Monza. Despite starting on the front row of the grid, Rea could not get away with the leading group in the first 18-lap race at the 5.777km Monza circuit. However, the 24-year-old Ulsterman fought his way past Troy Corser in the final laps and was closing on fifth placed Michel Fabrizio at the flag. In race two, Rea was also the victim of the first corner melee (for the second year running!) as he was hit on the right hand side in the middle of the first part of Monza’s Prima Variante. Despite remounting and making his way back to the pits, his crew were unable to repair his CBR1000RR in time for him to rejoin the race.

“Frustrating really is the word, especially in race one when we just didn’t have the speed on the straight. I could match the lap times when I was on my own and able to run the right lines. But as soon as I got involved in a race with anyone who slowed me down in the places I was fast, I got forced off the line and lost the speed. Sixth was OK but certainly not what I’d hoped for. I’ll have to see the footage of race two to find out what really happened, but I feel like I got clipped from the inside which forced me up and into the guy on the outside. We’re going to Miller next, which has another long straight, so I hope the guys back at base can find something. Luckily, we’re testing there the week before the race so I hope that gives us at least a chance to do better than last year.”

Noriyuki Haga and his PATA Aprilia finished up race one a distant 16th, but a right-in-contention 4th in race two, just over 2.5s behind Laverty at the flag; he lies 10th in the championship. Jakub Smrz (Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati) wound up 10th the first time out, and scored a DNF in the second race. Placed 9th in the title chase, he was philosophical as ever; “In the first race I had a good start and even a good race pace, but unfortunately I could not fight long straights with faster bikes. I could beat Checa, but I lacked a little luck. In the second race I unfortunately could not avoid two riders who slipped in front of me. Luckily I suffered no serious physical consequences, and in addition we hope for a better result at Miller Motorsports Park circuit as this circuit is far more suited to the characteristics of our bike.”

World Supersport charger Broc Parkes made a good start and looked capable of staying with the group immediately behind runaway early leader and eventual race victor Chaz Davies, but the Kawasaki Motocard rider ended up in a battle for fourth at the end. He used all his experience to control that fight in the final sector of the race and got a good points haul as a reward. Parkes is third in the rankings, on 60 points compared to the joint leaders Davies and Luca Scassa on 70, so still well in contention after four rounds. He was ok with his result overall; “I was pretty happy because I got away good from the line. I was a little bit concerned about my pace after morning warm-up. It is so important to have a good top speed here but also pace in other areas. Two guys came past me and then I ended went fourth. I could see that this probably going to be my battle so I tried to stay there. Every time I tried to break the guys behind they could slipstream me so I sat on the back until I felt I could go and then I tried in the last three or four laps and I broke them to get fourth place. I think that was the best I could do today in the circumstances.”

The next Word Superbike championship round is at Miller Motorsports Park, with racing taking place on May 30.

ARAI LOOKS FORWARD TO THE THUNDERSPRINT

This weekend – 7th and 8th of May – sees the Thundersprint take place in the town centre of Northwich, Cheshire; this well-established event has become one of the most popular and well-attended events on the UK’s motorcycling calendar.

The Thundersprint track is laid out in Northwich’s main car park and although tiny, at just 447 yards, is a superb little race circuit. The individually timed sprints take place on Sunday and racers taking part this year will include Arai’s MotoGP superstar Cal Crutchlow, who has always had a hankering to ride at the Thundersprint. He’s suitably pleased; “I have heard so many good things about the Thundersprint that for 2011 I was determined to be there. I enjoy racing in world championship events but they are serious work in every way. I’m coming to the Thundersprint to do what I love best in life: be with bikes, meet fans – and have a play about on the track too. I’m also looking forward to being with some of the famous riders of the past and seeing some fabulous historic Grand Prix bikes.”

There will be print programmes available throughout the Thundersprint on both Saturday and Sunday; these will be completely free of charge as is admission, parking and grandstand seating.

Arai riders work hard in Portugal but good results – and victory – is the reward.

“IT’S BEEN HARD WORK, BUT FINALLY WE GOT A WIN!”

Dani Pedrosa took not only his first win at the Circuit Estoril in Portugal, but also put firmly behind him the shoulder injury that has blighted the start of his season. After qualifying in third place Pedrosa blasted off the line and glued himself to Jorge Lorenzo from the 1st to 24th laps; then with a perfect overtaking move he seized the lead of the race and took the flag with a three second advantage. He is now just four points behind Lorenzo in the overall championship standings.

“I’m very happy for the win, but more than the win I’m happy for my condition and it seems that my surgery was finally successful. I was trying to rest my arm at times as it was cramping with 15 laps to go, I was riding behind Jorge and waiting for the numbness to come together with the loss of power, but it didn’t come! I’m just so happy to see that the surgery has worked, it’s been around six months with this and it’s a big relief. For the race, I was riding at my best, Jorge is amazing here always riding so smooth and fast, I was trying to stay with him and in the end I felt comfortable and tried to make a move. I’m very happy to win here, it’s my first win in this track and thanks to all the doctors, my physio and trainer because it’s been hard work.”

COLIN EDWARDS, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3

“IT WAS JUST SURVIVAL FOR THE FIRST FEW CORNERS!”

Colin Edwards claimed a season best sixth place finish after he’d produced a magnificent early challenge to fight with Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso as the Italian pair battled for fourth spot. The experienced American looked poised to join the Rossi and Dovizioso battle on lap ten when he closed to within 1.5s of Dovizioso with a determined performance. But he almost immediately started to encounter a side grip issue and despite a rousing effort to remain in touch, he settled for a safe sixth position to finish leading non-factory rider once again.

“I don’t know what happened at the start but there was stuff going on everywhere. I saw Casey have a big moment and then Simoncelli needed a parachute, so it was just survival for the first few corners and see what happened. I saw Valentino and Andrea right in front of me and I was ready to reel them in. I was getting closer but I was pushing so hard just to stay in touch I lost a bit of side grip in the middle of the race and the lap times dropped a bit. I couldn’t have tried any harder to catch them and felt I had the pace in some areas, but when I opened the throttle the traction control would kick in because I was having quite a bit of wheelspin. I can’t really ask for anything more because I know the package I’m on and I know how fast the factory bikes are and the guys sat on top of them. A top six to take into the next race in France gives us all a lot of confidence and I’m already looking forward to going there.”

CAL CRUTCHLOW, MONSTER YAMAHA TECH 3

“I KEPT SOME FAST AND EXPERIENCED GUYS BEHIND ME…”

Cal Crutchlow looked on course to secure his best MotoGP finish of a rookie season; he showed outstanding form in the early stages of the race to pull away from an exciting battle involving Hiroshi Aoyama, Nicky Hayden and Ben Spies. Only Aoyama had the speed to match Crutchlow and the pair engaged in a captivating battle; Aoyama took seventh on lap 20, but determined not to let the former 250cc World Champion streak away, Crutchlow retaliated on lap 25 with a clinically executed overtake. He kept the hard charging Japanese rider at bay until the start of the final lap, and despite a brilliant attempt to re-pass at the final chicane, was only just unable to claim the position.

“I’m happy enough with that because before the start of the weekend I’d have never thought it possible to finish in the top eight on a circuit I’d never even seen before. And considering I had problems with both my arms all weekend, it is a great feeling. My right arm, which I had the operation on, is fine, but my left arm is really sore because I’ve been compensating with it. But the team have been awesome all weekend. They have experience of helping rookie riders and they are doing a great job for me. And they’ve adjusted the bike to help me feel more comfortable with the arm problems. It is a shame I couldn’t quite beat Aoyama at the end. Earlier in the race I felt really comfortable and kept some really fast and experienced guys behind me. If I keep doing what I’m doing at the moment then there is no reason why on tracks that I know that I can’t be even further up.”

NICKY HAYDEN, MARLBORO DUCATI

Race Position: 9^th Championship Position: 5^th

“SPIES HIT ME PRETTY GOOD AND STOOD ME UP...”

Starting from the fifth row Nicky Hayden had a very strong launch off the line, and the American was seventh after the first lap. A small shifting problem affected him a little, but it was mainly the contact with Spies that caused him to lose time to the Aoyama and Crutchlow battle.

“Starting from thirteenth, it was always going to be difficult for us, but the bike was good off the line and I got a good start. I made some early mistakes, but I was also recovering a few positions. I got into seventh, but was having difficulty back-shifting. Already on the sighting lap, I knew it was an issue. On the grid, we talked about getting on the other bike, but we decided together that it was better to stick with our bike and not start from pit road. It caused some difficulty, especially on corner entry, and some guys came past. Then Spies hit me pretty good and stood me up going into Turn 3, so I lost the bridge to Aoyama and Crutchlow.”

Hiroshi Aoyama put his Team San Carlo Honda Gresini machine over the line in seventh place; he lies seventh overall in the title chase. Czech rider and MotoGP rookie Karel Abraham had an unfortunate DNF on his Cardion AB Motoracing Ducati – he is 11^th in the championship standings

Round 4 of MotoGP is at Le Mans, Sunday May 15.

News of two very special limited edition Arai RX-7 GP helmets has just been announced; the Doohan/TT and Haga Monza White will be complete one-offs appealing to fans and collectors alike.

Every year a very special guest is invited to the Isle of Man TT to ride the legendary lap of honour and for 2011 Arai has invited no one less than Mick Doohan. Doohan is best known around the world as five times MotoGP World Champion (1994-1998) and during his outstanding career he always wore and trusted Arai. Several MotoGP riders will join Doohan during the ‘Arai Lap of Honor’, offering a truly unique spectacle.

His famous red, blue and white striped helmet with Koala bear cartoon on the back has become iconic – and Aldo Drudi has designed a limited edition helmet for this special occasion in white, black and red incorporating the TT logo, plus ‘Three Legs of Man’ details and the essence of Doohan’s original paintwork.

The black, limited edition Haga Monza was a tremendous success in 2009. Noriyuki wore this design at the Italian World Superbike race and interest was immediately overwhelming; all of the original Monzas sold very rapidly and thus inspired the brand new RX-7 GP Haga Monza ‘White’. This stunning version is also designed by Aldo Drudi and draws inspiration from its black predecessor; it features the circuit layout, its latitude and longitude as well as his NKI 41 motif. Arai’s RX-7 GP: the racer’s benchmark

Race One: 12th Race Two: 5th Championship Position: 3rd

“IT’S BEEN A TOUGH WEEKEND…”

Leon Haslam had a torrid weekend at Assen, but battled hard for points that could prove crucial later in the season. Starting race one on the third row he fought his way up to seventh before crashing out, remounting in second to last place; by the end he’d made it up to 12th, collecting four valuable points (Jonathan Rea nosed his Castrol Honda ahead of Max Biaggi to take the win) on the way. Race two was a different story – Haslam made a much better start into seventh place, and as the leading seven riders broke away, Haslam stayed with them. He got past Eugene Laverty on the start of the fourth lap, then managed to get in front of Noriyuki Haga later that same lap. On lap eight, Leon Camier forced his way past Haslam and began to chase down the leaders; for the remainder of the 22-lap race, Haslam had to work hard to try and defend his track position, fighting off constant attention from Laverty, Michel Fabrizio and Haga for the majority of the race to eventually finish in fifth place. Carlos Checa took victory at the flag, from Biaggi.

“It’s been a tough weekend. We’ve been encountering a few minor issues that made lap-by-lap consistency difficult. The situation obviously wasn’t helped by my crash in race one, the back of the bike came round on me unexpectedly and I was unable to stop myself from crashing. I also got clipped by one of the other riders when I was on the floor, which meant I was a little sore for race two. Still I got a good start in the second race and managed to get up with the leaders but sadly I was unable to progress through the pack. But we still managed to secure another top five finish and I know that we will go away from here, work hard back at the workshop and prepare well for Monza.”

JONATHAN REA, CASTROL HONDA
Race One: 1st Race Two: 3rd Championship Position: 4th

“I’M HAPPY TO BE BACK WHERE I BELONG, IN THE WINNERS’ CIRCLE!”
Jonathan Rea won race one and followed it up with a podium in race two to kick start his season in style; Assen marks the home race for Rea’s team and the victory was his first of the season and the first for the newly branded Castrol Honda squad, which is based just 50km to the south of the historic 4.452km circuit. After qualifying in fifth place on the grid, Rea made a good start in the opener and passed Checa for the lead on lap four, before powering to victory from second placed Max Biaggi. In race two, the 24-year-old had a slower start and, as he tried to get by fellow Ulsterman, Eugene Laverty, Checa and Biaggi were able to open a gap which Rea was unable to bridge after his tyres went off.

“I’m proud of this one. We spent all weekend developing the bike for the races, and that strategy paid off. I got a good start but couldn’t decide whether to let Max past and let him dictate the pace. In the end I made the right decision to stay in front and take the win. We had to dig deep in race two because I got held up for a while and the front guys got away. I was matching their lap times but we ran into some tyre problems later in the race. I’m really happy with the weekend though – it’s been a long hard winter coming back from injury. The team has worked really well and that’s exactly the right sort of confidence and momentum that we need to take to the next races. I’m happy to be back where I belong, in the winners’ circle.”

Noriyuki Haga and his PATA Aprilia had a superb superpole and qualified fourth on the grid; a DNF after a poor start in race one did not go down well but he wound up race two in eighth, scrapping hard all the way.

Jakub Smrz (Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati) qualified brilliantly and put himself second on the grid. He had to fight through the pack though, then crashed at Assen’s famous last corner chicane taking his teammate Guintoli out in the process. In race two he made it home in ninth; “The first race I was always in close contact with the front group, though I had to avoid a falling Haslam and got off line. But then I made my mistake in the chicane and inadvertently caused the crash for my teammate Guintoliho. I suffered an elbow injury that did not affect my performance in race two. I had a bad start though and during the first laps I got into contact with Camier; I finally finished in ninth place, only a few tenths from fifth place...”
After a race that was re-started twice World Supersport campaigner Broc Parkes eventually took his second podium of the year and is now only three points from the top, in second place overall, as points leader Luca Scassa crashed out; “I was a little bit fortunate that some other riders went out but I was unlucky to be bumped wide in the first turn, so it was just luck coming back my way. We have learned some things to take from this weekend to Monza and the team is always working on new things, so we can look forward to that.”

In the Superstock 1000, Arai supported rider Davide Guiglioni took a superb first place and further success followed in the European Championship Superstock 600 with Michael van de Mark also taking the win.

The next Word Superbike championship round is at Monza, with racing taking place on May 8.

MotoGP star to Experience Mountain Course with Arai Parade Lap

Arai sponsored Nicky Hayden, the 2006 MotoGP World Champion, has confirmed that he will attend the 2011 Isle of Man TT Races, fuelled by Monster Energy as part of the event's Mountain Course Centenary celebrations.

His scheduled visit, on Wednesday 8th June, will include an Arai Parade lap with five-time 2010 TT champion Ian Hutchinson and five-time Australian 500cc World Champion Mick Doohan. He will also start and present the trophy for the Monster Energy Supersport Race 2, before he begins his preparation for the British MotoGP round at Silverstone on Sunday 12th June.

The charismatic American, known as the 'Kentucky Kid', currently races for the Ducati Marlboro Team in the 2011 MotoGP championship with team-mate Valentino Rossi and finished on the podium in the second race of the season at Jerez following his 9th place at the opening round at Qatar.

Hayden is the youngest AMA Superbike champion in history, winning the title at the age of 21 in 2002, a year that also included victory in the Daytona 200. He moved to MotoGP in 2003, winning the Rookie of the Year title in his debut season and ending the season fifth overall.

He finished 3rd in the 2005 Championship, the year he also won his first race at Laguna Seca in the USA. He won the MotoGP Championship in 2006, clinching the title in the last race of the season at Valencia.
"I'm really looking forward to going to the Isle of Man. I've been to pretty much every kind of motorcycle race you can imagine-the Daytona 200, the Jerez MotoGP, the Anaheim Supercross, the Namur World Motocross-but I've never been to the Isle of Man or any other real street race. George White’s annual season opener, ‘BLAST’, promises to be bigger and better than ever for 2011. Expect big names, bargains and entertainment a-plenty as the two-day extravaganza returns to the company’s HQ in Swindon on 16/17 April.
The eagerly anticipated dealer event of the year is always one not to be missed and this year is no exception. Visitors can kick off the Spring in style with a spectacular mix of mad deals and stunning action – all topped off with appearances from the cream of the racing crop.

Top riders from British Superbike Championship will head to Swindon for a final relaxed weekend before the 2011 season explodes into action at Brands Hatch seven days later. Davy Morgan Racing continues support of Action Cancer

In 2009 the Davy Morgan #71 Road Racing Supporters Club was set-up to raise funds to help Davy with his road race budget. One of the club members suggested that we should also look to support a charity as well and with Davy’s famous Pink Helmet the link was made with “Action Cancer” and their “Breast Cancer Awareness” campaign. The club proceeded to design a metal pin badge based on Davy’s Helmet with the Action Cancer Pink Ribbon on it. These were sold at race meetings throughout Ireland and the Isle of Man and we were blown away by the response. At the end of that year we were able to present Action Cancer with £5000 and a further £2400 pounds to Breast Cancer Charities in the Isle of Man and Southern Ireland.

For the 2010 season the club decided to continue Davy’s association with Action Cancer, but this time it was their "Get a Grip !" campaign, which supports men’s prostate cancer. The Pin Badge for 2010 again featured Davy's famous Pink Helmet, but this time it carried a blue ribbon and the "Get a Grip!" logo. It was not as successful as the first year, but it was not expected to be as a number of other riders used the same idea to raise money for their chosen charity. The club did however, thanks to the generosity of the road racing fraternity, raise more money for Action Cancer and a cheque for £1500 was presented at the Davy Morgan Golf Day sponsored by Belfast Honda at Knock Golf Club on the 25th March 2011.

Thanks goes to all those kind people who sold and more importantly bought the pin-badge’s in 2009 & 2010 and not only supported Davy, but also this very important and life changing cause. In 2011 Davy will continue to carry the “Action Cancer Logo’s" on his Arai Helmet, Leathers and Race bikes, to help promote the charity. The club will continue to sell the remainder of both badges at £3 each or £5 for the pair in the hope that once again the racing fraternity and beyond will show their generosity and help to support Action Cancer and their "Breast Cancer Awareness" and/or "Get a Grip !" campaign.

Arai riders bag valuable points at the spiritual home of Superbike racing

“I WAS GLAD TO SEE THE CHEQUERED FLAG…”
BMW’s Leon Haslam finished fourth in both races of the second round of the World Superbike Championship at Donington Park. Haslam led both races but endured contrasting fortunes on his way to the fourth place finishes, and to retaining third place in the World Championship. He led the opening 23-lap race for the first six laps and was only pipped for a podium finish on the very last lap to cross the line fourth and add to his third and fifth place finishes in round one in Australia a month ago. The Derbyshire rider hit the front once more in the second race of the day but then almost crashed on lap eight, running off the track and onto the grass at Coppice corner. He rejoined in ninth place and fought his way through to an eventual fourth place finish. Marco Melandri, riding for Yamaha, won race one, and Althea Ducati-mounted Carlos Checa race two.

“It’s not the sort of day I wanted but I’ll certainly take the points. After qualifying in second place, I really felt that we were in with a chance of winning. But it’s very early days for me and BMW and my expectations are maybe a little high at present. In the end I simply didn’t have the pace to win but the consistency is certainly starting to show now. In the second race I had a big highside at Coppice and went through the screen, cutting my neck, so I was pleased to see the chequered flag…”

JONATHAN REA, CASTROL HONDA
Race One: 5th Race Two: 6th Championship Position: 6th

“OK IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH”
Castrol Honda rider Jonathan Rea was not entirely satisfied with the fifth and sixth place finishes he achieved at Donington Park, but believes they were the best he could achieve. Opting for the harder rear tyre in race one, Rea was involved in a number of battles but ran across the Esses on lap eleven, dropping back to ninth place before fighting his way back to fifth at the flag. His crew adjusted the engine mapping on his CBR1000RR for the second outing to provide more punch out of Donington’s Melbourne hairpin at turn 11, but it wasn’t enough to improve traction and Rea was forced to settle for sixth.

“We got through the weekend OK but five and six is not what we came here for and, by my own standards, ‘OK’ is not good enough. I’ve tried my best all weekend but I got duffed up a bit in race one and maybe could’ve finished a bit higher. In race two, I didn’t make any mistakes and rode as well as I could so it was frustrating when the other guys came past. We tried to use the softer tyre during the weekend but it tore up after ten or 12 laps so I’m not sure if it would have made any difference. We’ve got some work to do, I think – especially on the electronics side of things to get driveability off slower corners. Luckily for us, Assen hasn’t got the stop-go slower section that we have here, so I’m looking forward to getting there for a bit of flow.”

Noriyuki Haga had a blinding race one, looking much like his old self and carving his PATA Aprilia all over the track – he eventually finished sixth, just nine seconds behind the winner. Race two was less rewarding, and an error at the Redgate interrupted his rhythm; he ended up 17th at the flag.

Jakub Smrz (Effenbert Liberty Racing Ducati, pictured below) nearly won the first race, and was only overhauled by Melandri as his rear tyre faded in the dying laps. He rounded out race two in 8th place, and characteristically dealt with his near-win well; “Of course I am disappointed to not win the race but it was really nice and I am back on the podium, which is important. The feeling all the race was very good and the bike was perfect, in the end my rear tyre was gone and I could not push any more. Marco passed me and I did not want to risk anything in the end.”

World Supersport campaigner Broc Parkes qualified his Motocard.com Kawasaki on the front row and unlike some other riders was untroubled with significant technical issues in the race, although he lost traction from his rear tyre in the later stages. His top five finish left him in a solid second place overall. He was fairly pleased with his weekend’s work:

“We’re second in the championship overall and it was good to get some points again. We just didn’t have the pace from the start and I tried to conserve the tyre a little bit, because we were a bit concerned about tyre wear pre-race. I could see the group in front of me and I tried to stick with them but at the end I could not battle for a podium position.”

The next Word Superbike championship round is at Assen, with racing taking place on May 17.
